Just about a week ago, Brian Rendel was up on the hills of Mont Ripley in time to catch the sunset's illumination of the Portage Canal and Lift Bridge. Beautiful scene.

Then Brian revisited the same area this past Sunday morning and was treated to brilliant blue skies and a foggy Portage Canal. Afterwards, he went home and produced his first time-lapsed video of the fog moving on the Canal, as it slowly burns off and succumbs to the sunshine. Brian said the whole event lasted about 45 minutes in real time. The video is a quick watch, at 1 minute, 15 seconds. You can enjoy his creative adventure by clicking here: October Fog on Portage Canal

What a treat... thanks for sharing with us all, Brian.

I keep on having to go back and look at that first
photo again and again. What a great one, Brian!

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Friday, October 26, 2012 - 07:51 am:

Great shots once again!! I soooo wish I could be there shooting photos as well, although Mary might get annoyed by me filling her in-box everyday..... J

By Marsha, Genesee/Aura (Marsha) on Friday, October 26, 2012 - 07:51 am:

The video didn't come up for me. Great vantage point for these pictures! Temps dropping in the Flint area today, high in the 50's. Funny that people are complaining about that! Guess that's what happens when you're spoiled by temps of almost 80 in late October!

Flash is required to watch the video, so it doesn't come in on iPads or iPhones

By coincidence today's Pasty Central Day in History also ties in to Mont Ripley.

Edie and I were in Houghton this week, after dark when that low-lying blanket of fog was slithering through. We were hoping someone was capturing pictures of it :o)

Incredible...they look like scenes from a fairytale.

Me too, "Ert", that's beautiful....the clouds and the trees!
Thanks, Brian.

Hi
These are truly beautiful, combining fall color and evening and morning twilight. The morning one in particular gives you a sense of the season, with the cold fog and the fall color.

By sometimesyooper (Nancyd) on Friday, October 26, 2012 - 09:46 am:

Beautiful. The fall color is really hanging on.

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Friday, October 26, 2012 - 11:02 am:

Fog on the Portage Canal, what a neat local, miniature example of a tule fog (a.k.a. radiation fog/valley fog) as often occurs in California's central valley in the winter — but it can persist there for days or weeks!

This occurs when the cold air, being heavier than warm air, flows downhill and settles in a valley overnight, generally in calm wind conditions — sometimes filling the valley to the brim until it "burns off" with the warming of the the morning sun, and perhaps a gentle breeze, as shown in Brian's excellent video!

More beautiful Autumn scenes.

Beautiful Photos!

By Barry Seymour (Bimplebean) on Tuesday, November 6, 2012 - 06:35 pm:

I have to confess to a lot of frustration here. I
want to download that pic and set it as my
wallpaper, but when I go to the photographer's page
I can't find it!

A link to the pic in the album, right from the
picture shown here, would be a great help.

Thanks for all you do

Mary says: I'm sorry for your frustration, Barry, but not all the photos that are used for daily shots are in the photographers gallery album. Sometimes they share them with us by other means, as is the case with the photos here today. Even when the photo is in the photographers gallery album, it's not always available in a larger size for the general public.
Again, my apologies for your frustration on this issue.
