Mt. Arvon is located near L'Anse and looking at the photos here today from Bill Haller, it's quite the place to view the fall colors. Standing on the highest point in Michigan, sure does have its advantages, since it looks like you can see forever. This time of year, that's certainly a bonus to be able to see so much color around you, while standing in one place.
Bill had this to say about visiting this prime viewing spot: "The colors changed constantly as the clouds obscured the sun. An hours drive from Houghton, it's amazing how few signatures are in the visitors log atop the summit, even in this glorious season."
Thanks for taking us with you to the top, Bill!

Beautiful shots ~ wish we could be there!
Wondered how much of the "Minnesota" storm got to the UP and the big lake. 18' waves mean the winds did!

Greetings:
Wasn't there a large track sold to a developer up the side of Mt. Arvon some years ago?
The colors this year in the Upper have been "Awesome". These pictures show this. Thank you!

Beautiful photos! I remember going up there in early October many years ago. I love seeing all the slate along the way.

Hello Thanks so much for the beautiful pictures---it just improved my morning.
It said foot traffic only---how much of a hike is it to get there?

The View, Trail Projects, and Road Improvements are sponsored by: Plum Creek [Developers], Baraga County Convention & Visitors Bureau, The Highpointers Club, Indian Country Sports, CDC Logging, Huron River Contracting, and Superior Shores Contracting.
From the improved roadway, the clearing and drainage work, and the directional signage - it's a great example of a co-operative endeavor.

It's quite a short walk, you can drive most of the way on good roads, and it's basically a gentle slope.

I remember when I tried to drive to Mt. Arvon, maybe 15 years ago or so. I made several wrong turns on logging roads and ultimately gave up. It sounds like it is much more accessible now. I had heard previously, though that the top was forested, so there really was no view; have they cleared it out somewhat?

Rode snowmobiles up there about 10 years ago, and I remember no view, just seeing tree trunks 360*. But beautiful pics.

How will the weather today (rain/snow) affect the fall colors? Do you think the leaves will be down/brown?
By Savanna Hansen (Shansen) on Friday, October 5, 2012 - 01:47 pm:
@Kathryn Laughlin
You pretty much drive right to the top, you just have to walk from the parking lot up to the sign and the lookout point. I think the sign is there to keep ATVs and Snowmobiles from driving up there.

Gorgeous photos today, thank you, Bill Haller & Mary! The high winds (almost gale-force in Houghton, now), in addition to rain/sleet/snow are probably going to hasten the loss of leaves, unfortunately. This has been a wonderful fall in Copper Country!

Wonderful View! How lucky you were to see this beautiful sight. Thanks!

Absolutely not. Took a ride today the leaves are still "showing off". They are also still clinging to the trees. But, it depends on where you go. You will see some gorgeous colors if you travel around a bit.
Anyone coming UP this weekend will still get an eyeful and that will be all she wrote. :(

J T (Jtinchicago): "Wasn't there a large track [sic] sold to a developer up the side of Mt. Arvon some years ago?"
A large railroad track? or perhaps a tract (of land). <wicked grin>

FRNash and all:
You are correct. I meant the use of the word tract. As in 50-60 homes being built on the lake side of Mt. Arvon. I'm guessing that nothing came aboot.
