I thought I should add to my previous page post that it was originally called the U.S. Revenue Cutter Service and renamed the U.S. Coast Guard (possibly from an 1863 newspaper editorial) on Jan. 30, 1915 when the U.S. Lifesaving Service was incorporated with it. Since then, the U.S. Lighthouse Service has been incorporated (1939) with the USCG.

I join Thomas and Jbuck, Happy Birthday U.S. Coast Guard. My brother-in-law served with the Guard during WWII, and wore his unifrom proudly!

We're actually watching the Olympics from Umea, Sweden this evening. On Monday, we'll be touring a copper mine that dates dack from the 800's and mined continuously until 1992.

Jarmo: we drove through Finland a couple days ago and talked about how much it reminded us of the UP in places....

We're just down the street from the Clarion Alex, staying at the Scandic Plaza. Last night we ate at a Scottish pub that had authentic food and ambiance. It was a nice change from the Norweigen food we had been having, not that I'm complaining; the food here is amazingly good!!
