George Hoyem was recently dining with gnomes. Well, not exactly, but he was definitely surrounded by them while in the Ambassador Restaurant in Houghton. Those gnomes, depicted in the murals on the walls there, have quite a history, dating back more than 50 years. The mural artist, "Mr. Rohrbeck", was commissioned to paint the murals for the Bosch Brewery, by Joseph Bosch. Somewhere in the late 40's or early 50's, the murals were sold by the Bosch Brewery, to the Ambassador, where those gnomes have been busily singing, brewing and celebrating since, adding a unique charm to your dining experience while there.

You can read more about the history of the Ambassador and the murals here: Ambassador History.

GREAT pizza!

By Marsha, Genesee/Aura (Marsha) on Saturday, August 11, 2012 - 09:06 am:

Great tostada pizza! I have a picture of that in my main gallery, but don't know how to post it! I especially like to eat there in the fall and enjoy the colors while enjoying THAT PIZZA!

Looks like an elegant place to dine! Love the lighting!

By Greta Jones (Urbanescapees) on Saturday, August 11, 2012 - 10:25 am:

Absolutely the BEST pizza! Especially the lobster pizza, and the chicken broccoli. And a nice view of the canal & bridge while dining. Ambassador rocks!

My favorite place to eat in the Copper Country!

I love this place! Our favorite place to eat~especially love their tostada pizza!

By jbuck (Jbuck) on Saturday, August 11, 2012 - 01:19 pm:

Have never been there but it looks great! Would a
Wildcat be at risk dining there?

These gnomes look very similar to the ones on the
wall next to the Kewpee Hamburgers (now Halo Burger)
in downtown Flint. Seems those guys are advertising
Vernor's rather than beer, however!

I believe there were also gnome murals, by the same artist, at another restaurant in the area. Maybe the Michigan House? Does anyone else recall this?

Heartily recommend the Ambassador. Pizzas are excellent; also try
the ravioli. I remember an outstanding sub sandwich, but that was
many years ago.

By Jim Grill (Grillski) on Saturday, August 11, 2012 - 03:33 pm:

Had lunch there yesterday. A Tostada Pizza, beyond any question, the very best anywhere. Everything on their menu is just the best. Have a great weekend.

By D. A. (Midwested) on Saturday, August 11, 2012 - 03:58 pm:

Remembering how good it was back in the 1970s, I had
the sub sandwich again last summer during our
vacation week on Torch Lake. It was everything I
remembered. Deliciously great bread.

Wish we could return this year.

I'm drooling all over my keyboard after reading the menu of the Ambassador....think I'll have a Reuben sandwich with bits and pieces of everything else! :9~~~

By Morning Glory (Lucylu) on Saturday, August 11, 2012 - 08:04 pm:

Beautiful hotel. I can't believe I have never been in there. Has the entire hotel been preserved original? Thanks for the pictures. I will plan to visit the next time I am in the UP. There are some beautiful murals in the Michigan House in Calumet as well. And a gorgeous antique wooden bar. We had lunch there this July. The food is good too!

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Saturday, August 11, 2012 - 08:40 pm:

It's been a while since I've been in the Ambassador. I think the last time was having dinner with the Dr., Capt., Mary and my hubby. And that was last August. Haven't been back since. Maybe next time. Love their food and the atmosphere!

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Saturday, August 11, 2012 - 08:42 pm:

Forgot to say that I was with Peter in that the ravioli are to die for!! Oh, and so is the pizza, spaghetti & lasagna!

By scot turnquist (Scotturn) on Sunday, August 12, 2012 - 12:03 am:
