Leave it to Brenda Leigh to find something unusual to make using a beautiful flower from the shores of Lake Superior. It's called a Fireweed flower and is not only common here in the U.P., but also in Alaska. Brenda picked these pink blooms and then proceeded to make Fireweed Jelly. I've never tasted this jelly, so I'm curious as to whether it would be spicy, due to the fiery name of the weed or if it's a sweet, flowery taste? Inquiring taste buds want to know!

Nice, Brenda. Does it taste anything like dandelion jelly? I would never have believed how good that tasted if I hadn't tasted it myself. Took 2 years of Ron's making it before I was brave enough to try it, but it really is darn good.
I've never seen these flowers that I know of. Doubt I'll see them this year since there are only 2 days left of vacation and the weather's not cooperating, but maybe next year.

Oh my gosh, these flowers are so pretty! I would love to know how the jelly tastes also.

The jelly's intriguing. Too bad our computers don't have a "scratch & taste" button. :) We were at High Rock Point in July, and I had fun taking close up pictures of the fireweed with Superior in the background, but I didn't know what the flowers were called. I learn something new on Pasty every day!

Well, Charlie and Mary were supposed to be working on this much-needed PastyCam feature for years now; I guess it is still "in development"?? ;-)

The recipe's right there in pic #3, you just need a magnifying glass and someone to move the pan out of the way.

Fascinated with Fireweed jelly I did some research and read someone compared the taste to some what like cranberry jelly.

So sorry that I didn't get a chance to check on pasty earlier to answer some questions about the fireweed. It has a distinct flavor that is light and sweet. It does not taste at all like cranberry to me as that is very tart. I love the flowers and the jelly and the color. If one cannot find the recipe on google please send me email and I will mail you mine. It is so simple to make ...much like dandelion jelly which I love also.
Thanks to Mary and Charlie for this site as well.
