Courtney Perreault and several of her friends were recently out "falls hunting" and hiked into the Montreal Falls in the Lac La Belle area. To get there is a bumpy ride in and then the last 1.5 to 2 miles or so, is a good hike to the Lower falls and the mouth of the Montreal River, where it flows into Lake Superior. You can tell from Courtney's photos, that it's well worth the hike to get there and the scenery along the way is just as beautiful, with glimpses of the Big Lake along the way. If you're really adventurous after you reach this spot of the Montreal falls, you can venture even further (about a ½ mile), on a small dirt path, to the Upper Montreal Falls. And, if you still want more, there is a third falls in this series, about another ½ mile trek on a little traveled path, so the going may get rough. I can't vouch for the third falls, but have been to the other two here and can tell you that they're worth the extra effort to view them. Of course the best time of year is in the spring, when the water is really flowing at its best, but Courtney's shots here, show that it's flowing pretty well right now, too. Thanks for doing the legwork on our visit to this Keweenaw Falls, Courtney!

Very nice...I always wanted to make this hike, but I don't know if I could do it now. I should have gone when I hiked to Bare Bluff years ago, hindsight being 20/20 :-(

Thanks Courtney for the great photos. I love this hike. The last time I visited this area Gitchee was rockin n rollin. The spray from the falls was blowing up river. It was a grand day.

I try to make it to the mouth of the Montreal River every year because it so beautiful and peaceful. There is a nice beach for cooling off after the hike. I swam across the mouth to the other side a couple of times.
