Ever closer to the Keweenaw.
Dogs are being perfect.

God speed, Nancy, and continued safe trip.

What spectacular pictures this morning. Mike's caught my eye right off the bat. That was beautiful! Then Fred's caught my eye also. That bass definitely looked good enough to eat:-) Roger's butterfly picture was a keeper for sure. Peg's beans and Tricia's beautiful lake picture summed them up for me!!

Thanks for starting my dad with such beauty and reminders of just how much pleasantry we come across every day of our lives!

Technically, none goes to Charlie; the 4 cents goes to the owner of the gas station!! ;-)

Dr. Nat and I are in Kongsberg, Norway today and will be leaving for Bergen tomorrow. We have spent the day here visiting the Norweigen Mining Museum and the King Mine. The Kongsberg area is known for its native silver deposits; much like the Keweenaw with its native copper. The first true miners to extract the silver were the Germans, who settled here when the mining began in 1623. The peak of mining was in 1770 when 4,000 miners were employed. The miners had a very similar life to the miners of the Keweenaw, including the 12 hr. shifts, furnished housing, a pension plan, etc...

The King Mine, the largest of the mines in the area, operated until 1958 when the price of silver dropped and the mine was mostly depleted of silver. The mine goes down 1,068 meters on a 70 degree dip angle. We went in via an adit that extended 1,750 meters under the mountain to join the King Mine qworkings. We went on a 2 hour tour underground and it was one of the best mine tours I have ever been on!! Our guide, who spoke excellent English, was very knowledgableabout the mine and was interested in the fact I too had worked as an underground mine guide for several years, so he picked my brain for quite some time after the tour was finished.

I posted a photo below of the typical Kongsberg silver. The second photo below is of the adit entrance.

Thanks for the update on your journey, Capt. Bet you're also enjoying the relief in the temperature change from good ol' Texas.

Sounds like a geologist's Disney World, Capt...Enjoy the ride!

By Dan Kemp (Upkemper) on Friday, July 20, 2012 - 12:11 pm:

Capt. Did the miners have pasties?

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Friday, July 20, 2012 - 04:29 pm:

No, Dan. Remember, these were German miners, not Cornish so they didn't even know what pasties were.

Hey guys (and ladies),

Instead of filling the WhatsUP pages with our trip to Norway, I'm going to start posting our trip photos and tidbits over on the Geology - the U.P. and other places thread on the Politics and Religion section of the PastyCam. So please check over there often.

Enough for today; it's already 11:22 p.m. and it's still daylight out, but when you're at 60° North I suppose that's to be expected..... J
