A real double-take today, when looking at the photos quickly, you think you're seeing the actual buildings, when in reality, you are viewing HO scale models, put together by Chuck Pomazal, for the Carnegie Museum in Houghton. They are doing an exhibit on local architect, Charles Maass and asked Chuck to provide the visual aids for the display. The models include Temple Jacob, the Jewish Synagogue in Ripley, the Quincy Mining Co. Bath House on Quincy Hill and the Houghton City Center (Masonic Temple).

The models are all completely scratch-built, using model railroad building supplies, such as brick sheets and window castings, but Chuck also utilized a lot of original carvings with rubber molds and urethane casing. Very impressive indeed!

For those of you who tuned in earlier today (Sunday) you saw the link to last week's Shoebox Memory for Chuck's photo that solved the mystery of the Old Quincy School.

The hours for the Carnegie Museum and information about the current exhibits, can be found HERE.

Mary, thanks for stepping in at the last minute today and preserving our tradition of a picture a day, now in our 15th year. I didn't make it back in time from Bete Gris, where we spent the day with our daughter Becky and her girls, Kira and Kit. Mary uploaded the very pictures I had in mind for today's Shoebox Memory. Before midnight!

Have a good week :o)

Very interesting replicas. I didn't realize there is a Museum in Houghton ... looks like a fascinating place to check out! :-)

A labor of love.

I thought that first one was a model, then scrolling down, I realized they all are. Really excellent work!

Have to admit i would have considered the discussion of the pictures of the school as 'counting' for Sunday!

Chuck, these are fantastic models. For Temple Jacob, not only did you get the building so close to actual, but you included the staircase and hillside as well! Congratulations on producing such fine pieces of work.

Unbelievable, so realistic. The Jacob Temple is one place our confirmation class for Trinity Episcopal Church visited back in the early '60s. Are all these places nonexistent today?

By Charles Pomazal (Cpomazal) on Wednesday, July 25, 2012 - 09:26 pm:

Only the Quincy Bath House is gone. I was able to photograph it extensively, inside and out before it was bulldozed.
