What awesome water photos today!

Have a great Saturday, everybody!

1998 and don't forget 2008. He didn't ask what kind
of "boot"

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Saturday, June 23, 2012 - 08:40 am:

The flood and destruction pictures for Duluth, Mn. are unbelievable! Too much reminding of the flood damage and night mares of 2008 that happened here in Linn County, Ia. when there was 15 ft. of deep water, 35 ft. from my back door.

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Saturday, June 23, 2012 - 09:28 am:

Speaking of reminders, Janie, the photo of the split tree on Cam Notes reminded me of a 'micro-burst' at our place back in the 1990s, it was so strong it split off a large section of a sycamore tree which fell into our barn and it downed a large locust tree on the lake dam. Vicious wind!

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Saturday, June 23, 2012 - 09:47 am:

Good Morning. Today is the good day of the weekend. In addition to 1998 and 2008, you could make a case for 1999 if it were in England, where they call their car trunk their boot. :-)

Speaking of Duluth, my husband has been working there on a project for the last few weeks. On the morning of their big rain, it took them an hour to get back to the motel, for a trip that had always before taken 10 minutes, thanks to the flooded roads, sink holes, washouts, and mudslides. It's a shame to hear about the zoo animals that drowned. And it was mighty lucky they managed to save the seal that was in the middle of the street before it was hit by a car.

JT...nice try, but I guess that boot don't mean jack :-(

Grandelicious set of pix!

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Saturday, June 23, 2012 - 10:14 am:

Alex...nice try, but you don't know jack, you need to give the boot to James....Bahahahaha!

By Alex "UP-Goldwinger" (Alex) on Saturday, June 23, 2012 - 11:29 am:

Opps...:-0
I guess I'll just have to start calling you James.

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Saturday, June 23, 2012 - 11:33 am:

Haha! Leave it as Jimbo, not so formal! :)

No, he didn't, then as Marianne Y (Marianne) said:
"… you could make a case for 1999 if it were in England, where they call their car trunk their boot. :-)"

Good one, Marianne, you beat me to it! (Darn three hour time difference! I hate DST!) <grin>

By Thomas Baird (Thomas) on Saturday, June 23, 2012 - 01:11 pm:

Janie T.: I was stationed at Grand Forks, N. Dakota in the late 1970's, and they had a record setting flood in 1979. I remember there was a detour within the detour, as I would drive to the base from the south side apartment building where I resided. Of course that record was broken with the 1997 flood.

By JH (Thumbgardener) on Saturday, June 23, 2012 - 01:42 pm:

I was just watching some videos of the Duluth flooding on you tube. It reminds you of the phrase "water always wins" when it comes to natural disasters.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Saturday, June 23, 2012 - 01:59 pm:

Thomas, we lived in N.D. that year, also. That was quite the flood. And my heart just breaks for the people in Duluth. Such a shame. It's all the way down to Moose Lake, on I35, south of Duluth. The only way you can get there is by boat. Devastation galore!

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Saturday, June 23, 2012 - 03:55 pm:

Thomas, was that flood in Aug. of 79? We had a flood here in Aug. 79. I was 8 months pregnant with Michelle, Bob & I canoe all over the farm. The flood waters moved dad's big bales of hay all over the place. Those big bales each weighed about 1700 lbs.

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Saturday, June 23, 2012 - 04:00 pm:

The boot on the convertable is where the top goes when it is down. Altho we can't see it, it is there. So 1998 is right also.

By Thomas Baird (Thomas) on Saturday, June 23, 2012 - 04:25 pm:

Janie T.: As I recall, the 1979 flood was in April, the Red River overflowing its banks. I was lucky, as the part of Grand Forks I was in was not affected. I wouldn't be surprised if that was not the case in the 1997 flood.

By Hollidays (Hollybranches) on Saturday, June 23, 2012 - 04:48 pm:

They are draining 6 inches of water from Lake Gogebic because UPPCO needs more water for Bond Falls to make electricity. It's been a strange 3 years UP here. Not enough rain, temps higher than normal and strange insects invading us. Some of them might be relatives, not sure. :)

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Saturday, June 23, 2012 - 06:34 pm:

Thomas and Deb, we lived in Washburn, ND (30 miles north of Bismarck) from 1981 to 1983, so we missed both floods. But did see a record 40 below zero temp with a windchill of 100 below!

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Saturday, June 23, 2012 - 07:08 pm:

Shirley, I was in Hazen from I think '79 until '83. Used to drive through Washburn, about 30 miles from Hazen, all the time on our way home from Bismarck. The winters were absolutely awful there. You couldn't pay me to go back. My son went to college in Grand Forks, and even visiting him in the winter was terrible. Don't know how those people can live there!

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Saturday, June 23, 2012 - 07:23 pm:

I hear ya, Deb. Winters are miserable there. My husband was with Kaiser Engrs. building the Great Plains Coal Gasification plant at Beulah, so we were pretty well acquainted with Hazen and other little towns up there. Remember driving on 'black ice'? No salt on the roads in the Dakotas!:(

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Saturday, June 23, 2012 - 07:29 pm:

I think everybody worked in Beulah then. And North Dakota's where all the work is now, too. Well, I'd have to get pretty hungry before I'd every go back.

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Saturday, June 23, 2012 - 08:03 pm:

Me too, Deb. Once is enough!

By Thomas Baird (Thomas) on Saturday, June 23, 2012 - 08:46 pm:

Shirley: I remember my first N. Dakota Winter (1977-78), when you would have a blue sky and sunny day, and the daytime high was 15 below 0 or so.

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Sunday, June 24, 2012 - 08:37 am:

Yes, Thomas, we saw a lot of those days. Often on days like that I would shovel 2ft of snow from the entrance to the garage and think nothing about it. But then I was still in my 40s.
