On these Sunday Shoebox Memories we occasionally encounter the "alphabet soup" of the FDR days (WPA, CCC, etc.) Here's another one known as the FSA, or Farm Security Administration. This boarding house in Baraga - taken in the summer of 1941 - was one of thousands of landmarks captured by FSA photographers, in their quest to chronicle U.S. life in the Depression Years. Locally the structure was referred to as the "Honeymoon Hotel". (Anybody have any stories?)
The FSA photographer was John Vachon (1914 - 1975). There is a good overview of the government project, as well as more of Vachon's 1941 photos, at Chuck Voelker's Copper Country Reflections. Also we found a high resolution rendering of this scene at the ever-interesting Shorpy.com.
Sorry a little late start for the Shoebox this Sunday. With so many projects at Pasty.NET and Pasty Central going on these days, it is hard to find time to do what I like most: starting a new page with you, right here on the Pasty Cam.
Honeymoon Hotel? That looks more like the Bates Motel many decades after Psycho, or perhaps a relative of that delightful ol' Dogpatch … er, Centennial Heights School that was the subject of so much discussion way back in Cam Notes of May 23, 2004!

I was thinking more like the Honeymoon Hotel for the Addams Family or The Munsters.... J

Actually, imagine it about 1900, painted and lived in. Does anyone recall the "Halfway house that was just up 41/26 from the "Last Place on Earth" in downtown Phillipsville?

I was thinking more along the lines of the Bates house, where his mama lived. Also reminds me of a statement that Bob Hope made many years ago when putting on a show at the Ryman Auditorium (where the Grand Ol' Opry performs) in Nashville, "What time do the bats fly out?"

Greetings:
Does anyone know the year of the building's demise or is it still there?
An interesting feature is the roof and fourth floor. Usually in these types of period styles the curved roof-walls are symmetrical with the building itself but the Honeymoon Hotel is not. Looks like the left side in the photo was a later addition that was added up to the third floor. Indoor plumbing, maybe?
Also, and this is a wild guess, the smaller building in the front of the building looks like a his/her hotel outhouse. Too small to be a garage for the hotel limos.
If you zoom in 400% on the 2nd picture on the windows you can see what looks like people. Wish I had software that could enhance these old pictures

What a neat old building. Love the roof architecture. I got lost for a couple of hours in Copper Country Reflections. Great site. With all the old photos out there, does anybody have a photo of the old Osceola school that was just off US-41, in Osceola of course.
