While visiting in Dollar Bay last week, Aladino Mandoli spotted a number of butterflies in some lilac bushes, so he grabbed his camera and started shooting. He said he only spent about ten minutes firing away and wished he had more time, because he could have spent all afternoon there, trying to get more shots. I'm just glad he was able to snap what he did and that he shared them with us all here. I just wish he could have also captured the heady smell of the lilacs to share with us, too.

In case you're wondering about the last photo's occupant, that's a White-lined Sphinx Moth, that is often mistaken for a hummingbird, because it resembles that tiny bird as it's flying around from flower to flower. It sure is nice to see the Keweenaw coming back to life with summer on the way now.

Last weekend in Duluth the lilacs were in full bloom. So nice to see them again as here in Iowa with a warm March our lilacs were blooming and done with by mid April.

Beautiful photos! Saw a Sphinx moth several years ago. They're huge.
Lilacs gone here too, Janie, seemed like a very short bloom time this year, for some reason.

That is what I saw on my flowers the first summer we were here, a Sphinx moth. I thoght it was a little bird. Sure was pretty though.

Dino, these pictures are just wonderful. It took me a while to get here today, but I'm glad I didn't miss this! Thanks for sharing!

I have a hunch those Lilacs are in my uncles yard! If so I've B&W pics of that lilac hedge going back to the 40s when I was just a wee little guy playing along side it!

Dinos photography is always top notch!
