In the 14+ years of this daily feature, rarely have we had a corrupt upload when publishing each morning. That's apparently what happened today :o(

A couple days ago we had the pictures of the
ladies who camped at the mouth of the Two Heart.
Sadly, now that campground is gone:

Forest Fire Forcing Immediate Evacuation in Pike
Lake Area
Updated: May 25, 2012 2:56 PM

A massive wildfire continues to rip through the
Upper Peninsula. We're told 17,000 acres near
Pike Lake in Luce County have already burned.

Rainbow Lodge and Two Heart Rivermouth Campgrounds
have been destroyed. Taquamenon Falls Campground
has been evacuated.

Strong overnight winds pushed the fire to grow
even larger. Crews are trying to attack the fire
from the West because of the strong winds.

They say this type of fire is more often seen in
the West, rather than the U.P. Officials have
evacuated homes East of Pike Lake to County Road
500, and people in the Little Lake Harbor area
should be on high alert.

A number of structures have been lost, but no
injuries reported. The DNR is working to set up a
website for people to be able to check on
evacuations, we will get you the website as soon
as it's available.

That was Brenda Leigh and friends, right, jbuck? That's terrible!
We've had so much rain in the Ohio Valley so far this year, it's hard to imagine some places UP there being so dry. Yoopers, be careful!

By Hollidays (Hollybranches) on Friday, May 25, 2012 - 04:52 pm:

Those fires were all caused by lightning. Not an act of man, but an act of nature and I hate it.

By jbuck (Jbuck) on Friday, May 25, 2012 - 05:05 pm:

Yes, you're right Shirley.

The folks who own the Rainbow Lodge are such great
people ~ they had only been open about a week this
season when the fire started. Feel bad for them
and all the folks with camps/cabins in the area.
Pike Lake has many around it.

The historic Crisp Point lighthouse isn't that far
to the east, and the Historical Society just built
a visitor's center too.

May our Lord keep the fire fighters safe!

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Friday, May 25, 2012 - 05:35 pm:

Amen to that, jbuck! I had just read that the Lodge was opened around the 15th, and I was thinking about all the folks who were planning to spend the holiday weekend at their cabins/camps. So sad.

By Dunerat (Dunerat) on Friday, May 25, 2012 - 09:03 pm:

That's terrible news about the fire. To get an idea of just how fast it's moving, go to the Coastwatch/Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory MODIS satellite imagery page. Select Lake Superior, and look at the image for 5-24-2012 at 18:04 GMT. Then look at the image for 5-25-2012 at 17:04 GMT, just under 24 hours later. You'll see the massive plume of smoke and the devastation the fire has already left in its wake. As jbuck says, pray for everyone involved.
