I'm going to call this adventure, Backpacking with Brenda, even though you don't really see any backpacks in these photos from Brenda Leigh, that's exactly what she did, along with several friends, from the mouth of the Two Hearted River, 23 miles to the Tahqaumanon Falls.

The first photo was the flat tire the girls had, before they even got to where they were to begin. After multiple unsuccessful tries at getting the rusted spare tire loosened, the girls just abandoned the vehicle right there for four days and hiked to the mouth of the Two Hearted for their first night's stay. They arrived in time for the beautiful sunset photo and then in the morning were treated to the sun shining on the same scene. Sure is a beautiful spot and with the bridge to cross over to get to the dunes on the Lake Superior side, it made for a peaceful start to their first day of the hike.

They spent three nights out, with it being cool in the evenings and definitely buggy, but the hike and the campsites were still enjoyable along the way. The bottom photo shows their tents set up for the last night before making it to their destination the next day. These are some tough Yooper ladies, with plenty of SISU to go around. You go girls!

How did I know that was Brenda, lol!!

So funny, cuz the sunset picture makes the sand look like snow. I had to look pretty hard at that one, but then showed pretty much the same spot in the morning.

You do have fun, Brenda! Thanks for sharing!

After experiencing the rusted lug nut issue myself, I now carry a two foot long piece of iron pipe that will fit over the lug wrench handle.

It give you that additinal leverage to break loose any bolt that doesn't require a torch. Plus, it doesn't take up much room in the trunk.

Thanks, Brenda for sharing your beautiful pictures. I love camping at the Two Hearted. Hope to be there this summer.

I wonder how many ladies were in the group? Looks like at least a few, from the number of tents. I've never been to this area, but it looks like fun!

By Lisa R. (Sisugirl) on Monday, May 21, 2012 - 09:02 am:

Well, except for the flat tire! Those are never fun!

By Donna (Donna) on Monday, May 21, 2012 - 09:29 am:

WOWOWOW!!! Thanks Brenda!!! You seriously need to write a book!

On the flat tire: Pour Coke on it..it'll dissolve the rust....Does anyone remember Legga Jarvey (sp?)...the fisherman from the Harbor? I had a flat one time when I worked at the Mariner and one lugnut was rusted on...Legga poured Coke on it and let it sit for 15 mins, and he coulda turned that lugnut with his fingers....amazing.

Well Brenda I see you made 'the cut'.;) Oh my, what a terrible way to start an adventure....with a blowout! But it looks as though it turned out to be a lotta fun! Knowing how you are, I don't think there's anything that can stop your spirit for adventure! Good for you!
Donna, thanks for that bit of info....just hope I never have to try it. :(

Looks like a little more then a flat tire to me. That looks just
plain blown out. I love those kind of trips though. They a the
ones I always remember!

Before taking a good look, and recognzing the folks in the picture were ladies, i was just sure this was a shot of one of UC's misadventures.

Nice pics. And to all of the Canadian visitors to Pasty.com, happy Victoria Day.

By jbuck (Jbuck) on Monday, May 21, 2012 - 04:47 pm:

Yes, that was the other problem.....knew you wouldn't be out there in a van, UC!!

By kosk in Toronto (Koskintoronto) on Monday, May 21, 2012 - 04:51 pm:

Dear Thomas,

This Yank Canuck thanks you. It's a beautiful day here in Toronto.
Just came from high tea with a friend at a historical inn here in
town. Along with the tea, I had a sugar cookie shaped like a crown
and a piece of Victoria sandwich cake which looked and tasted
remarkably like its Yankee counterpart, Washington pie. The jam in
the Victoria sandwich cake is strawberry, while the version I make
of Washington pie is filled with cherry jam in deference to our first
president's reputation for honesty. Both are yummy.

They do sound like they taste good.

Last time I was out at the mouth of the Two-Hearted I was reeling in a rather large steelhead just below that bridge. That was 20 or so years ago; gosh I really need to get back UP there......

Wish I could trade these corn fields for those pine trees.
