After Brenda Leigh visited Black River Harbor in the Ironwood/Gogebic area, she sent in these photos, adding a note about her time spent there:

"The drive in on the Black River State Forest Scenic Byway, is a grand drive and it so reminded me of the beautiful drive out to Copper Harbor. There truly is a lot of beautiful ground to cover out in that neck of the woods. The ultimate prize is at the end to see that Black River flowing into Gitche Gumee. What a spot to hang out for the day! And that's what I did... It was a beautiful day and many people were moving about. I got out there before eight o'clock in the morning and there was no one there at all. It was so awesome and I felt like I owned the place… so peaceful. I never left till three in the afternoon and it was pretty busy by then. There were lots of fishermen and hikers as well."
In case you can't read the information in the last photo, here's what it says: The Suspension Bridge was built back in 1938 - 1939, by 3601st Company CCC Camp Norrie. This 210 foot suspension bridge has stone supports at both ends, steel suspension cables, steel plates and one footsquare timbers that form the suspension of the bridge. It was designed to give and sway with loads and winds. It spans across the National Scenic Black River to provide access to the North Country Scenic Trail and Lake Superior shoreline.

Sure is a beautiful area, with enough to keep you busy exploring for most of the day. Thanks for taking us along with you, Brenda!

This is our favorite camping area of all time...we need at least a week or two visit there each year. You never seem to catch up on all the interesting places, stories, traditions and people around Black River Harbor!

One of my very favorite spots. My sister's father-in-law runs a charter fishing service at the harbor. Many fond memories....especially bouncing the bridge.

What I find as truely amazing about these photos is that I haven't been there in 40 years and it looks exactly the same. Kudos to all who keep it beautiful.

Visited here a few years ago. My memories are the beauty of the area and our dog being terrified to cross this bridge.

It should also be mentioned that there are numerous pull-outs along the way up to the harbour that go to some very beautiful waterfalls with great photographic opportunities. Also along the way is Copper Peak, the only "ski-flying" hill in the western hemisphere, at least from what I am told. Below are a couple websites for your reading pleasure:
