Melanie Hakala Rossi sure gets around and I'm especially glad she carries her camera with her wherever she goes. Today's collection of photos were taken on what she calls "Day Tripping". Melanie started out with a field filled with dandelions in Bruce Crossing, then moved on to Bond Falls, near Paulding, for a shot of the water flowing all over the place there. Her next stop was in Ironwood, at Little Girl's Point on the shores of Lake Superior. While there, she found a smiling face looking up at her from the bed of rocks. It must be happy because it's settled so near the Big Lake like that.

Her next destination was Lake Gogebic, where Melanie introduced herself to this prickly porcupine, but kept a good distance away, just to be on the safe side. I wonder why the porcupine crossed the road?

After he got to the other side, Melanie made her way to Bergland, where she spotted this black bear, but decided that a photo from the distance was the best idea here. She rounded out the wildlife shots with an Immature Eagle and a Bald Eagle, both captured sitting pretty in the trees, surveying the land around them.

Talk about an amazing drive around the U.P., with never a dull moment and always something to see. We really do live in God's country!

What a fun time that must have been. Love seeing the bears and the eagles! And I love the picture of Bond Falls!!

Thanks for sharing!

Love that porcupine picture!!!! It's short legged just like my Scottish Terriers, but can cover a lot of ground quickly.

Now that's what i call a great day trip in the UP, a bevy of beauty in every season no matter where you are.

Very nice set of pics!

Cut off that Porky's tale and you have the exact silhouette of the bear.

Whoops -- meant tail!

That's almost too much awesome stuff to look at in a single day. Thanks for the sensory overload, Melanie! I love the first shot of the dandelion field; it looks like Oz!

I love that little porcupine! I've seen adults, who are usually really shy but never a baby like that one. So cute.

By tom fisher (Osceola) on Wednesday, May 9, 2012 - 10:08 am:

Maybe the porcupine crossed the road to get to his Mountains ?

By FRNash/PHX, AZ (Frnash) on Wednesday, May 9, 2012 - 01:37 pm:

Maybe it's just me, but it sure looks like the railroad tracks in picture #6 would make for a seriously bumpy ride!

No matter how much we deride the simple dandelion you have to admit that is a fetching view. Sometimes we don't appreciate the wonders in our daily lives especially something as plain and annoying as this perky little treasure. Thank you Melanie. Wish I could travel with you sometime over the UP.What fun and so much to see!

By Jeremy (Jst) on Wednesday, May 9, 2012 - 02:21 pm:

Wonderful photos!
I love the UP!!

Wow ... something for everyone in this photo-fest today! For me, dandelions bring back sweet memories of when my daughter and son were small, and picked beautiful bouquets of dandelions to grace our kitchen table. How I miss those times! :-)

By Thomas Baird (Thomas) on Wednesday, May 9, 2012 - 03:33 pm:

Great photos, today.

By Therese (Therese) on Wednesday, May 9, 2012 - 04:15 pm:

JAD, take away the porky's tail and add some pretty serious teeth up front.

By Paul Roberts (Grizzlyadams) on Wednesday, May 9, 2012 - 06:48 pm:

The porcupine crossed the road to make the point that it could be done. :-) The pics are great!

By Paul Roberts (Grizzlyadams) on Wednesday, May 9, 2012 - 06:52 pm:

Yes. I know. That joke was unbearable so I'll just leave you hanging and fly away while I still can! :-)

By jbuck (Jbuck) on Wednesday, May 9, 2012 - 07:37 pm:

Little Girl's Point is one of my favorites in that
neck of the woods!
