Along with today's photos from Sierra Bishop, she included this note:

"Things that make me smile: Mason, MI (in the U.P.) is a small town with 2 dozen houses and is 1/2 mile long, yet they have four telephone booths there! It cracks me up each time I drive through."
Well Sierra, you're not the only one that enjoys seeing these old time phone booths as you make the quick drive through this little town and the best part about them, is that several of them even work. I like when it's dark, as some of them are even lit up. I can't say for sure, but I think the owner just enjoys them himself and loves to display these nostalgic phones for everyone passing through, too. Or, as Sierra was wondering... if perhaps Superman really lives in Mason and needs quick access to phone booths, thus the reason for four of them in such a small radius. You never know!

Actually, they are quite practical, because depending on which cell phone service carrier you have, you may not have service in Mason, so if you break down and need a phone, you have your choice... just pick one, drop in some coins and start dialing.

Good to see not all of Superman's dressing rooms have disappeared.

Thanks for the smile, Sierra!! What a nice way to start off my day. Mason makes me smile when I drive through it, also. And they're starting to spruce up those houses, too.

Number 3 looks like it's in someone's backyard.

I wonder if the duck decoy on top of phone booth #2 has some significance.

By Lisa R. (Sisugirl) on Tuesday, April 17, 2012 - 09:12 am:

The duck decoy! LOL! I didn't even see that, Nick. Thanks for pointing that out. My eye was on the Funeral Parking Only sign. I guess parking must be at a premium when there's a funeral in town. I think my favorite phone booth is the first one with the old gas pump and the M-28 and Hancock signs.

Well, I hope little Mason wouldn't need a Superman to beat back criminals! I'm sure it's a pretty safe place, except maybe for the occasional bozo driving through town on the way somewhere else.

I believe it is a Canada Goose decoy on top of booth #2. Maybe instead of the phone ringing, it honks. At least with phone booths, people couldn't make phone calls in their car and be distracted while they are supposed to be driving.

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Tuesday, April 17, 2012 - 11:44 am:

That's what I was thinking, Gary, a Canada goose decoy. I'm sad about geese this morning because the 'mama' or 'papa' of the pair that nests on my pond each year was hit by a pickup truck this morning....along with at least one of the little goslings. I was afraid of that since about the only time geese don't fly from one place to the other, is because they're leading little ones.

By Nick Karjala (Nmkarjala) on Tuesday, April 17, 2012 - 11:46 am:

Gary, you might be right but I think the decoy looks like a very large female mallard. Anyone else have an opinion?

I love the pics. As i was returning from my vacation the other day...Mason and the phone booths sure made me smile and I laughed as i pointed them out to my minneapolis son.

By Lisa R. (Sisugirl) on Tuesday, April 17, 2012 - 01:24 pm:

I think Gary's right -- this looks like a Canada goose decoy. It has white cheek patches similar to the real thing. Compare: http://nationalzoo.si.edu/scbi/migratorybirds/featured_photo/bird.cfm?pix=Canada_Goose

My favorite pasty phone booth of all time is this, from (click →) May 9, 2003:

Phonebooth with hornet nest

(The phone doesn't ring, it buzzes!)

By Nick Karjala (Nmkarjala) on Tuesday, April 17, 2012 - 02:09 pm:

Lisa, re the decoy-I didn't notice the white cheek, I was looking for a black chin-strap which doesn't seem to show in the picture. Geese are year-round pests at the lakes and ponds in southwesterm Ohio.

Nice 2 c some pay phones and phone booths are still around. I like the vintage cutout M-26 sign, 2.

By Lisa R. (Sisugirl) on Wednesday, April 18, 2012 - 10:00 am:

Hi Nick. I'm late in checking this page again; probably no one will see this posting. Geese are pests around where I am, too (FL). They poop all over the sidewalks. Still, the animal lover in me likes them. Their fuzzy babies are adorable.

The phone booth with the wasp nest is hilarious, FRNash. Nothing says "stay away" like a wasp nest, right across the door. LOL!
