I know, you're thinking that I have it all wrong on the Pasty Cam page. A bird in the hand is worth two deer in the bush, that's not how it goes, but for today's photos from Sally Beaudette, my version works better. Did you notice the deer in the background of the first two photos? It looks like neither the birds or the deer are afraid of Sally and her family. Those first two photos are of Sally's husband, Ron, as he stands patiently still, waiting for the Chickadee, dee, dee, to land on his hand and eat some of the seed he's holding.

The third photo is Sally's son, Brad's arm, as he lures one these trusting little birds on his hand. That's also Brad's arm in the last picture, in which he is getting a Nuthatch to eat right out of his hand. I was surprised to see that, as I knew the Chickadee would do this if you were patient enough, but I had no clue a Nuthatch would do so, too. These Bootjack birdies sure are friendly!

Almost forgot...Happy St. Urho's Day!

How neat is that I tell you? Not everyone can do this I bet!

...and did anyone notice what Ron is wearing in the first two photos? Very cool!

Fun and fantastic photos today. The birds seem sooo tame!

Alex, are you referring to the Stormy Kromer or the short sleeves? I'm happy with the hat... a little scared of the short sleeves. I know that winter just can't be over yet - I'm wondering how bad the spring blizzard(s) will be.

Fantastic photos. How wonderful to have this repour(sp) with God's critters! Yep we'll probably get a doozy of a snow storm yet. Cause I put away all the gloves, earmuffs and hats in my car trunk and that's a sure testing of nature's activities hey?!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Another fabulous day ahead here.

Really great pics. Yep, Ron's wearing his "Stormer Kromer". Thought I might get away with that since Charlie's out of town.;-}

Mel...the short sleeves, but I'll bet the hat helps keeps him warm. It has been a strange winter.

I just received an email from Nick Karjala, with this photo and explanation of it:

"Attached is a picture of a chickadee eating from my hand when I was visiting my parents at their farm in Houghton County. I took the picture myself by holding my 35mm SLR camera in one hand and sunflower seeds in the other hand. Perhaps viewers of Pasty Cam would be interested in seeing this picture.

I have a photo somewhere of a goldfinch eating out of my husband's hand. My grandpa used to hand-feed a cardinal that stayed around for a long time. Have to wonder if persons who can do that have a unique calmness that the bird senses. Both my husband and grandpa possessed that quality.

How beautiful...the pics and everyone's stories...St Francis of Assisi's bloodline remains~! :D

Thanks for posting the picture, Mary.

Re the picture of a chickadee eating sunflower seeds from my hand, my mother used to refer to them as "her chickadees" since they ate from her hand regularly. She often said that she thought that the same ones came back year after year, I hope that was true. Chickadees are seen in southwestern Ohio, finches are the most numerous of small song-birds here.

Hi
The top picture made me think of the song lyric "Look at all the happy creatures dancing on the lawn"(OK, no actual lawn visible, here). And the short sleeves add to the mellow spring vibe.

During the day on New's Eve, some friends and I went to a local park (Kensignton Metropark) where people have made a practice of feeding birds from the hand for years. In the beginning, only the chickadees were bold enough. But by the time my friends and I went to feed birds, the tufted titmice and downy woodpeckers also came to the hand. As my friend Steve observed, a male cardinal was eyeing the process but didn't act. Maybe in a year or two, cardinals will also try it.

Nice pictures today, from both Sally and Nick! The first two look like Sally's husband is quite the animal whisperer, as if those deer might walk right up and eat out of his hand, too!

Down here in Florida, we have a few red-shouldered hawks and barred owls that hang around our neighborhood and sometimes our yard, and several Carolina wrens and cardinals that frequent our yard. Nothing eats out of our hands, though. We don't live so close to nature as you fine folks in the U.P. do, but we enjoy it when it comes to us here every now and then. :) Happy Friday all!

Happy St Urho's Day! Great pics as usual! Missing the wildlife. I don't get to see as much of that here in OH as I would in the UP. Makes me look forward to my trip even more!
