Charlie at Pasty Central (Chopper) on Friday, March 9, 2012 - 06:44 am:

Mary Drew - your regular weekday moderator - often sends me the daily Pasty Cam photo in the evening, for use the next morning, which I post (usually before 8am) along with her comments. The first beautiful photo above - from Shawn and Brian Malone - was actually ready last night for publication today.

Occasionally as I go to bed, I see a random national news podcast (FOX, NBC, CBS, ABC) to catch up on world events. Last evening it happened to be NBC Nightly News, where they featured a story about this week's solar flares. How exciting - right toward the end of the broadcast - to see a short clip of Northern Lights in the U.P. with the name SHAWN MALONE across the top! It looked much like the second photo, which appeared last week here on the Pasty Cam.

Then this morning I find we had a flurry of pasty orders yesterday. Coincidence? Try Googling "shawn malone cam" and see if pasty.com doesn't come up near the top of the list.

Our thanks to Shawn and Brian for sharing their 'glimpses of life in the U.P.' with us here on the Pasty Cam for some time now. It's what we've been doing every day for the last 14+ years, and hope to keep on doing as long as folks like the Malone's keep sending Upper Michigan beauty our way :o)

Awesome pictures today!

By Mike Schneider (Upmike) on Friday, March 9, 2012 - 07:15 am:

Nice pics! Love the Northern Lights and Stars!

By JAD, Orgnst (Jandalq) on Friday, March 9, 2012 - 07:49 am:

Charlie -- I saw the same Malone picture on NBC. They (Malones) have quite a collection on their website. Unfortunately we have not had many clear nights up here to make a 2 am trek out to The Big Lake worthwhile!

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Friday, March 9, 2012 - 07:57 am:

That's so exciting! Wish I'd have seen that broadcast! These pictures are beautiful! Love them both!

By Cindy, New Baltimore, MI (Cindy) on Friday, March 9, 2012 - 07:57 am:

Absolutely stunning! I would love to see this in person. Maybe someday . . .

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Friday, March 9, 2012 - 08:46 am:

Beautiful! Read that the 'northern lights' might be seen farther south than usual, so I started looking and hoping to see them down here, but no such luck, it was pretty much overcast.:( Oh well, guess I'm lucky to have seen them once in my lifetime.

By sometimesyooper (Nancyd) on Friday, March 9, 2012 - 09:11 am:

So beautiful! I can't wait until we are UP in May. Hope they last all summer!

By Kathyrn Laughlin (Kathyl) on Friday, March 9, 2012 - 09:39 am:

Hello
The top picture in particular is wonderful. I looked for them here in SE Michigan; although I was treated a beautiful bright full moon, stars and planets, there were no northern lights (at least not before I went to bed).

By Charlotte, Mishawaka, IN (Charlotte61) on Friday, March 9, 2012 - 09:58 am:

Saw the same news broadcast. As soon I saw the picture I knew it was Shawn's. Didn't see any northern lights here in N. IN. Did enjoy the full moon. Thanks Shawn for sharing you talent with us.

By Thomas Baird (Thomas) on Friday, March 9, 2012 - 10:42 am:

Beautiful!

By Paul H. Meier (Paul) on Friday, March 9, 2012 - 10:54 am:

WOW material!

By Frederic W. Koski (Fred) on Friday, March 9, 2012 - 11:04 am:

Congrats! Was shown on Fox news yesterday morning as well.

By Karen Benton (Nerakthenice178) on Friday, March 9, 2012 - 11:17 am:

I was also watching the NBC Nightly News broadcast, but didn't see the name on it when it came on screen. I told my mom that I had seen that very same picture on the Pasty.com Cam and had used it as my background for that day! Way to go, Shawn!

By Tom (Tom) on Friday, March 9, 2012 - 11:17 am:

ABC also had pictures and comments about the
"northern lights" last night. And to think when
I was a kid walking home from the skating rink
and the northern lights would actually cause the
darkness to be diminished. We just took that for granted--that the lights would be there most clear nights. The skating rink I used
to go to was called White Pine. On US 41 near the
airport.

By kay Moore (Mskatie) on Friday, March 9, 2012 - 12:42 pm:

I saw that on NBC and wondered at the time if it could be from the UP. And when Al Roaker was giving national weather report I thought he should use those snow plowing features from yesterday to show off what REAL snow plowing looks like! Some where I remember an old photo of Grandpa Slattery standing on the plowed street next to a moutainous bank of snow. Wish I could find that.

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Friday, March 9, 2012 - 01:24 pm:

Thank you for the awesome photos, Shawn, Mary, & Charlie! Congratulations on making it to the national news front, Shawn! I saw it on Fox yesterday morning, too.

Happy TGIF! It's been a long week here. We have a short weekend this weekend, with our annual "Spring Forward". Please remember to change your clocks tomorrow night. I had totally forgotten about that, until a friend of mine mentioned it to me yesterday.

Today's photos are unspeakably beautiful. We may deal with harsh winters but we are blessed with amazing beauty here in the U.P.

By Al Harjala (Alsocal) on Friday, March 9, 2012 - 02:28 pm:

No need to have harsh winter for Northern lights, watched them out over the lake in July back in '75 from Bumbletown hilltop. Wife had never seen such beauty and solar activity was high at the time (K-5 intensity).

By Martha Kirk (Misschiefie) on Friday, March 9, 2012 - 02:41 pm:

Now here's the dilemma. For the past few weeks I've had the photo of what I call "The Bird in the 'Hood" from February 12, 2012 (I mean look at that punk feather/hair style and the mask and those gang colors on the tail) as my background because it makes me laugh every morning, but both of these photos are so gorgeous that I want them as background too!

Check out the galleries at (click→) spaceweather.com for some incredible aurora photographs … and even some videos!

For example, see (click→) Lights Over Lapland, and be sure to check out the videos!

The video on the main page will begin playing as soon as the page opens, but to see it in its full glory, be sure to hover your cursor over the 'mini-video screen' and click on the 'full screen icon' there …

… (shown here): vimeo

That's the kind of display I remember seeing as a kid near the north end of Larson Road north of Bruce Crossing in the early to mid 1950s, although with a larger spectrum of color. I sure would like to see that again!

By Hollidays (Hollybranches) on Friday, March 9, 2012 - 04:28 pm:

FRNash, the most beautiful display I ever saw, thank you.
Also, thanks to the Malones, wish I could have seen it.
Been here in Ontonagon for three years and have yet to see the Northern Lights. Maybe someday.

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Friday, March 9, 2012 - 06:47 pm:

Thanks for that site, FRNash! The one on there that looked most like the aurora we saw in N.D. in the 1980s, was the one from Bovey, MN. Rather faint but nonetheless, awe-inspiring.

By shawn (Twoyoopers) on Saturday, March 10, 2012 - 12:42 am:

Thanks Charlie and Mary for sharing our work and thanks all for the very nice comments! NBC Nightly News actually aired two of our videos- one Wed and the new one Thurs. Thursday's spot and credit were especially generous on NBC, FOX, and WGN. It also aired this morning on Good Morning America and Weather Channel and many local affiliates across the country. The new time lapse northern lights video-photographed March 7-can be found here: http://vimeo.com/38094084.

By Brenda Leigh (Brownmoose) on Saturday, March 10, 2012 - 06:48 am:

Shawn and Brian your photography is breath taking. Thank you for all your time and effort to capture such phenomenal shots!

By shawn (Twoyoopers) on Saturday, March 10, 2012 - 09:18 am:

Glad to hear of the bump in pasty sales Charlie ;)

By Morning Glory (Lucylu) on Monday, April 9, 2012 - 05:15 pm:

That is so cool Tom that the northern lights lit up your skating rink! How blessed are you?
