Mike Schneider and Abigail, decided to have an adventure at Presque Isle Park in Marquette recently. From the way they're bundled up, it must have been one of our colder days here UP North, but cold or not, what a great memory for this little lady. She may not remember the snow covered black rocks or the height of the Mineral rock walls, but she'll definitely remember sitting on this bench, watching Lake Superior and having a snack during their winter adventure. The Big Lake is definitely a memory maker

As cold as it looks, I have no doubt that Abigail will remember that day. Cold or not, she's spending time with her dad, so "all's right with the world"!:)

Lake Superior is responsible for making a lot of my best memories!

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Wednesday, March 7, 2012 - 07:56 am:

Mine too, Janie, whether it be UP there or out here on the North Shore Drive. The lake is just mesmerizing!

Thanks for sharing your adventure, Mike.

Any idea what the black rocks or Mineral rock is??

By Uncle Chuck (Unclechuck) on Wednesday, March 7, 2012 - 08:20 am:

One of my favorite places to visit.

If I remember correctly, those black rocks are some of the oldest exposed rocks in the world. Am I right, Capt.?

Capt:
I found this write up for a geologic road trip of the Marquette area:

http://www.mestarocks.org/Download_Files/MBGS%202011%20Stop%20Summary.pdf

It says the Black Rocks are a Serpentinized Peridotite.

I agree UC! Presque Isle is a nice little get-away.

By Diana P. (Diana) on Wednesday, March 7, 2012 - 11:29 am:

Oh my, I've never been to Presque Isle in the winter ... didn't suppose that it was open then. Is the road through it kept plowed? It's definitely my favorite place in Marquette! Thank you for the winter pics of it. :-)

Seeing that second photo brings back memories of 1975. I was standing on those Black Rocks the night the Edmond Fitzgerald went down. The wind was fierce - blowing ice and snow so hard it felt like your face was being peeled off and the waves were huge! So big, that they washed right over the rocks and into the diving cove just to the east of where that picture was taken.

The photos are lovely. They certainly reflect some of the beauty of winter in the U.P.

By Thomas Baird (Thomas) on Wednesday, March 7, 2012 - 02:33 pm:

Fine pictures.

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Wednesday, March 7, 2012 - 03:57 pm:

I have to admit, I kinda asked that question facetiously as I knew what it was all along. However, I didn't know about that website David, so thanks for the link!! Presque Isle is a classic locality to see peridotite because it is so well exposed. And, I like how Mike captured the black rocks image with the snow in the fractures; it really brings out those features!!

Actually, the oldest rock exposed in Michigan is along US 45 just north of Watersmeet, called the Watersmeet Dome.

By FRNash/PHX, AZ (Frnash) on Wednesday, March 7, 2012 - 05:07 pm:

Watersmeet Dome, see mindat.org, Watersmeet Dome. Oh lookie, Photo by whom? None other than Capt. Paul (Eclogite)!

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Wednesday, March 7, 2012 - 06:57 pm:

Watersmeet...isn't that where Frank Loyd Wright built his house?

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Wednesday, March 7, 2012 - 07:13 pm:

Ignore the above, remembered it was "Falling Water".

By jbuck (Jbuck) on Wednesday, March 7, 2012 - 07:23 pm:

Diana,

No, they don't plow the road around Presque Isle in the Winter, but it is a great time to snow shoe or cross country ski. Its a whole different experience in the Winter of course.

Appreciate all the comments! It was pretty chilly. I pulled Abigail around on the sled and had a big blanket for her to sit and wrap up in. The first pic was actually as we were heading back and I'd figured she was ready to get back to the car...but then she seen the bench and wanted both of us to "sit" (bless her heart) as we had some fruit snacks.

Capt:
I figured that you knew the answer when you asked that, but I thought that write up was pretty informative.
