If you're interested in extreme skiing or snowboarding, you've either skied at Mt. Bohemia or you wish you could. It's advertised as a ski resort, unlike any other in the Midwest and part of that is due to the buildings that house the various facilities at the foot of the hill. They're called Yurts, which are portable, wood-framed structures used by Turkic Nomads in Central Asia. Melanie Hakala Rossi was recently there and she snapped a few photos of the Yurts and the hill on a beautiful, sunny day for skiing.

She also spotted someone else out on that beautiful day...that's none other than our own eye in the sky, E. Neil Harri, flying around in the Keweenaw skies. Usually Neil is the one who is snapping photos of unsuspecting critters or people down below. But Melanie has turned the tables on him and captured his plane flying by. I sure hope he was smiling. :->

Nice plane Neil!

Nice plane, indeed.

Ya know, you can go your whole life without hearing the word "yurt", and now I've seen it twice within a few day period, lol!

Nice pictures!

The Dr. and I know what the inside of that plane looks like, eh Neil?? ;-)

Over this past summer, Neil was gracious enough to take the Dr. and I on a flight over the Keweenaw looking at the many geologic features on the Peninsula. I will say that is definitely the way to see the landscape and gain a new perspective on how the Keweenaw formed and developed over time.

Thanks again, Neil!!!

They have yurts for rent in some of the state parks over here in Washington and Oregon! Very cool.

They're a hit in Mongolia too.

Seems I remember seeing a structure like that being built on some television show (maybe on PBS) several years ago. It was being built for a woman.

They look like Jabba the Hutt.

I still miss the fire tower.
