Congratulations to the Calumet Science Olympiad High School and Middle School teams, for taking home the first place hardware from the Regional Competition at NMU last Saturday. Thanks to Marcy Bessolo Hermanson, we get a look at the winners, and she also supplied us with the information about the competition:

"Our High School team placed first out of 12 U.P. schools and our Middle School team placed first out of 13 schools. Now, they both go on to State competition, held April 28th at Michigan State University. The students compete in various experiments and tests covering many areas of Science. Since late October, they have spent time after school, and on weekends researching and preparing for the event. The coaches are Darrell Hendrickson and John Asiala. They're a good group of kids who put their time in to make it a great day!"
Way to go, to everyone involved, students, coaches and parents, too. It's always nice to see kids doing something good, since we often only hear about the bad things kids do. What a pleasure to feature these young people (and their coaches) for a day on the Pasty Cam!

Were these the kids from Washington Middle School?

By Alex "UP-Goldwinger" (Alex) on Monday, February 20, 2012 - 07:31 am:

Nicely done! These kids may live on the moon someday.

U.P. POWER...comes in many forms!

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Monday, February 20, 2012 - 09:36 am:

I'll bet these kids spend more time in their books than they do on 'hi-tech' games and such. Nice to see...in this day and age!

Congratulations, HS and MS teams! Go for State!!

Well done!!

By Richard Wieber (Dickingrayling) on Monday, February 20, 2012 - 12:15 pm:

It is wonderful to know that UP kids, in spite of the forces trying to "dumb down" our schools, have risen above that trend. Another trend I see is the idea that every kid should go to college. If that was to happen who would be left to do the work the college people think up. Trades people are just as smart as college people, just in another way. An idea is worthless if it isn't materialized. The nice thing about these contests is that they think up the idea and DO it.

Amen Richard; my thoughts exactly!!!

By Diana P. (Diana) on Monday, February 20, 2012 - 01:45 pm:

Congratulations and great work, students from the Calumet Science Olympiad High School and Middle School Teams!! Congratulations to your coaches and parents, too! Good luck at the State competition! We know you'll do the UP proud!!

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Monday, February 20, 2012 - 03:27 pm:

I say Amen to that also, Richard!

By ILMHitCC (Ilmhitcc) on Monday, February 20, 2012 - 05:35 pm:

Congratulations to all the winners and
participants!! And many thanks to
the coaches and supporters, without whom this
could not happen. This
activity takes a lot of time and dedication from
all involved. My own
student started the Sci-O team at our rather large
high school, no small
task I tell you, after making States in middle
school. How great it is to
hear that so many UP schools are able to field
teams. We sure had a lot
of fun with it, and even I learned a thing or two!
;D
Good luck at States, and have fun!! Oh, and a trip
to MSU is no small
thing. I'd happily contribute to help make the
trip possible. Is there a
fund?

By Marcy Bessolo Hermanson (Marcy) on Monday, February 20, 2012 - 11:44 pm:

Yes, it is a big expense to travel. Students will have to contribute money and fundraise. Any donations would go a long way to help. The best way to get your donation to the right place would be to contact Mr. Asiala, jasiala@clkschools.org
We have a short time to scramble to raise money, so any help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.
