I've often thought if I ever wrote a book of memoirs for this website, I would give it the title: Pasty Central: Friends in High Places. Our very first web page was the 33 foot high Snow Thermometer on US 41- which pre-dated our domain name (with a very tall picture made before digital cameras were even available). Our Pasty.NET HotSpots in the Copper Country occupy lofty icons like the Calumet Theatre clock tower, the old radar base at Mt. Horace Greeley, Skytop Gift Shop on Brockway Mountain, the tower at the Keweenaw Mountain Lodge, Eagle River Courthouse, etc., etc. We're even on top of the ski hill in Marquette, where our network is served from a station we stream, WHWL's tower to the remote reaches of the county. We certainly do have "friends in high places".

An important "high place" to Pasty.NET - and the entire Copper Country - has a brand new look. The other night Edie and I happened to be over by the Mall in Houghton, just after dark, and we turned to look northward across the canal. The first time you see Quincy Mine illuminated at night, it takes your breath away. Towering above the horizon, glowing like an apparition from the mining days, the scene is profoundly historic and beautiful. We were glad to hear of their project this past week, which will provide those 2 hours of light each night in honor - or in memory - of any individual or organization that supporters would like to have paid tribute. To find out more see QuincyMine.Com

The honorees will be announced each day on WMPL in Hancock, another radio station streamed right here on Pasty.NET. We will also find a spot on the Pasty Cam where we can post the names each day. There are a number of names lined up already, and Edie and I would like to add another. We're clicking over to QuincyMine.Com to submit a contribution in honor of Russ Mitchell of Iron Mountain, who died on this day in 1945 at Iwo Jima. Find out more about Russ's life in the Feb 19 Pasty Central Day in History.

Happy President's Day tomorrow. Have a good week :o)

Worthy of a calendar cover or of postcards -- proceeds to go to pasty.com OR the Quincy Mine.

That IS an impressive building, Charlie, and I'm sure it is even prettier 'in person', especially at night! Thanks to you and your lovely wife for sharing what you saw.

I wonder what kind of lighting was used with the new led lighting and solar panels to charge batteries it would cost next to nothing except for the initial cost of the equipment to illuminate the mine that is if led technology has progresed as I know they make led street lights.

By Mary Drew at Pasty Central (Mdrew) on Tuesday, February 21, 2012 - 12:41 am:

jbuck and Darrell,

Just email me at: mdrew@pasty.com with your username and the email address you want on your account and I will change it for you. That is the one thing we have set so an admin has to change it. That protects us from getting hundreds of spam posts, as we have in the past.
Thank you!
