Those are not on US 2 Deb, but just north on M 77. I don't believe they are open for business anymore either.

35 bucks does not seem like a lot of doe. Maybe I'll get off my white-tail and head on UP. (okay...I'll shut-up now)

It seems to me that the Blaney Cottages are right on the northwest corner at the junction of US-2 and M-77. The sign shown is facing US-2, but it appears that the photo was taken from M-77 ... the cottages are placed at an angle on the property, I believe. I think they might be closed, but not positive. :-)

Diana...it looks like your right according to Google Street View. The sign now says; Blaney Park Rendezvous. On a side note, 4 bikers on full-dress Harleys are passing by on US-2, just north of M-77...summer pics and what a sight.

Always wanted to check out those Blaney Cottages. Been by them often. Sounds like it's too late to try them now. There is a lot to see and do along that highway from Escanaba and The Bridge. My favorite little town still is Grand Marais.

Why celebrate a 'strike'? ....just asking?

You may have noticed that the word "celebrate" is not used in regard to these planning activities.

While the 1913-1914 Michigan copper miners' strike may not be a "happy event" it is certainly a very significant period in the history of this region. Marking its centennial will be an appropriate way to highlight these important events and underline the ways in which our region's history is critical to national history - and how national history has impacted the Copper Country.

Finding appropriate ways to commemorate this period - and its many tragic events - will be challenging, but it seems to many in our region to be a worthwhile venture.

Hope you and others can join us on Saturday. Many voices will make for a rich discussion.

Thanks for the explanation, Erik....sorry I used the wrong word (celebrate). The reason I asked was because I had read here on Pasty once about the terrible tragedy associated with that situation. Thanks also for the invitation, sorry I can't attend.....too far away, too old and too crippled.:) Hope you have a large turnout!

Having a Lake Superior fish dinner tonight. It's called; Van De Kamps, comes in a box and found it at the Ontonagon IGA. :)
Another fatal snowmobile accident UP here today. Speed has been the factor. I think this brings the total to 6, not sure.

It blows my mind how the UP was tamed. I just can't imagine chopping that wood, hunting that food, clearing the land, building that house and surviving during the deep winter. Always thought about those rough days, always will. Have Yooper friends that have told us stories. Todd, our neighbor, across the river, who was born and raised near Toivola, told us how he and his brothers were cutting wood when his youngest brother got badly cut by the saw. They walked to M26 and hitched a ride by a stranger, who took them to the hospital in Houghton. The boy got treated and they walked back home. That was back in 50s. That is SISU!

Hollidays I have several books by Cully Gage that I'm sure are still avaiable in the UP. The author may use that name instead of his own. But these are his stories of the old days supposedly of his growing up in a small town in the UP. Many hilarious characters and situations. Not sure of author's true name. I think there is a connection between him and the writer of the book made into the movie ...oh nuts can't think of the name!!! A famous trial and it starred Jimmy Stewart? HELP you other yoopers! (This was in the 50's or 60's) You'll love the books!

"To Kill A Mockingbird", Kay?

I don't remember the author's real name, whose pen name was Cully Gage, but he was a Justice of the Michigan Supreme Court. I love his books. And yes, you can still buy at least some of them; I think some of them have been combined now, too.

I'm not sure how the weather in the UP is supposed to be tonight, but it's supposed to be a great night for the Northern Lights, from about 10:30 pm to 2:00 am. They would be visible here in the Lower Peninsula, if it weren't going to be so cloudy, sigh, according to the local meteorologists here in mid-Michigan. They had a huge solar storm, the biggest one in about 7 years, so there could be some cell phone issues, and you name it. I know we've had some problems with our cable TV getting messed up. (The signals are received by multiple satellite receivers at the local office, and re-transmitted by Charter.)

"To Kill a Mockingbird" is one of my very favoite books and movies. That starred Gregory Peck and Robert Duvall. It takes place in the south.

That's right, JH, I didn't really think that Jimmy Stewart's name sounded right, connected to that movie! I was thinking he and Lee Remick were in it, but I remember now that it was Gregory Peck. Thanks!;)

I got it! "Anatomy of a Murder", Jimmy Stewart and Lee Remick, written by a Justice from Michigan!

That's right Shirley; John D. Voelker was his real name, and Robert Traver his pen name.

BTW, we stayed at the Blaney Cottages many years ago. The cottage had a living room with a fire place, a good sized bedroom and a nice bathroom. In the morning the owners brought us home made muffins and tea (as requested) for breakfast. Really enjoyed the stay; wish they were still in business!

Cully Gage was the pen name for Charles Van Riper who wrote The Northwoods Reader series and other books about the UP. I don't know what his connection John Voelker might have been.

Thanks Shirley and jbuck. Something like that could keep me from falling asleep tonight if you hadn't straightened it out for me. And that's where I'd gotten the facts mixed up. Stuff like that happens often as one moves along thru the 'shady' years of life ha-ha It was two different authors. And "To Kill a Mockingbird" is another favorite book. Do they ever write any good books like that now adays? Quality? A friend lent me "The Help" today and looking forward to that. Thanks folks.
