Last week parts of the U.P. experienced their first real "snow days" of the new year, with snow and winds making visibility low and creating drifts on the roads, causing hazardous travel. Thanks to Frederic W. Koski and Shawn and Brian Malone, we have some good examples of the type of weather I'm talking about. Fred managed to brave the elements to snap today's first shot, on the shores of Lake Superior. He says it was a windchill of negative 10 this day... brrrrrr.

Shawn and Brian bring us into the woods with a photo of wind swirling snow around in the trees. When this shot was taken, the sun was making an appearance, but from experience I can tell you the sun doesn't make a big difference in temperature when the air is cold and wind is howling. That's what makes both these photos so wonderful... we can enjoy the blustery days from the comfort of our homes. Thanks Fred, Shawn and Brian, for braving the winter cold for us all. :->

Awesome pictures, but they send a cold message.

You can just tell how cold it is in that first picture. But I have to say, it's one of my favorite pictures. Thanks for my new background:)

Good photos for winter clothing commercials. What’s his name…Wim Hof?

Hi
It does look like you'd need the right clothing to be comfortable. But I'd still prefer that to what is predicted here: rising temperatures followed by melting followed by rain followed by freezing and black ice followed by snow. I'd rather it stay snow, with a bit of fresh until we get a depth that person could do a little cross-country skiing.

Glad I don't live UP there! Have experienced all kinds of temps lotsa places, but the coldest was a far piece from any of the GL regions.....North Dakota, where the temp dropped to -40F, and the windchill -100F. Couldn't breathe outside. Great photos though!
