So far this year our Shoebox Memories have focused on the Copper Country in the late 1930's to '40's, and we continue this week with a shot from Joe Myers, and his sister Darlene Vuorinen, who writes:
Here is the photo of my dad, Jim Myers. He used to trap around Eagle River, and the Traverse area... I can remember the smell of his snow soaked wet wool pants, and how he would skin the muskrats and stretch the pelts out on some kind of wire thing and hang it from the rafters in the basement. Our home smelled lovely on those days.
My dad was born in Minnesota, but his family moved to Rambaultown when he was a young boy. He hunted, trapped and fished most of his life and loved the outdoors. When he married my mother, they settled in Lake Linden, and that’s where our home was until they passed away in 2007 and 2008. We did have the “camp” in Eagle River from about 1955. That is where we spent out summers.
Darlene
Our thanks to Darlene and brother Joe, who provided a larger resolution of the scan. Jim certainly looks to be dressed a little light for that time of year. Maybe it was a warm day, like the ones we've been having off and on this month. I have a pair of boots just like that.
Keep those Shoebox Memories coming! It's fun to catch a glimpse of a moment frozen in time in Michigan's ever-interesting Upper Peninsula.
Have a good week :o)
