Over the weekend, Aladino Mandoli was on hand in northern Luce County, near Newberry, for the 2012 Tahquamenon Country Dogsled Races. He managed to capture a number of candid shots of the dogs and racers running the course, along with the last shot here today, of one of the racers heading toward the finish line, with flags waving and the crowd waiting to see how this team placed in the standings. Dogsled races are so much fun to watch and Dino managed to capture the excitement in the dogs faces as they do what they do best... run the race!

If you'd like to experience more of the event, click on over to here: 2012 Tahquamenon Country Dogsled Races. You can view the rest of the photos Dino snapped and even make it a slideshow, like you're right there watching the racers go by. Enjoy!

Mighty happy looking dogs! Another one of the many fun times in the snow!

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Thursday, January 12, 2012 - 06:58 am:

Those are great dog sled race photos, Aladino, thank you! I have been captivated by dog sled races, including the Iditerad. What kind of boots are the mushers wearing? They look huge & heavy.

Nice pics that definitely made me paws for a moment, although the first one looks a little ruff.

You have to look at the 2012 Tahquamenon dogsled race pictures. They are great. I like the black and white photos. Great pictures. ;O)

Alex: Waaaay too early. Please post it again later when I can manage to get more than a single "ha" to come out. Remember, I'm 2 hours behind Michigan time. Thanks.

Gary...maybe you should sleep in :-)

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Thursday, January 12, 2012 - 08:52 am:

Morning!! Beautiful looking dogs. Dino sure does seem to capture some nice shots for pasty. I hope his job is photography, cuz he's sure good at it:)

Thanks for sharing!

Fantastic pics! Thanks, Aladino! Alex, please shepherd your thoughts so you don't get chowed on so early in the a.m. :)

Great photos as always from Mr. Mandoli!!!

By JoAnne Stefanac (Davejostef) on Thursday, January 12, 2012 - 10:28 am:

LOVE that first shot. The snow coming down, the dog's tongues all flying, ears all back. Wow. Very cool action shot that is! Thanks for sharing these wonderful shots.

By Gary W. Long (Gary_in_co) on Thursday, January 12, 2012 - 10:58 am:

Alex, I would sleep in, but there is this pesky thing called a "job" that I'd like to keep and it's a dog-eat-dog world in the job market right now. By the way, I'm wide awake now, so Ha-ha-ha-ha-ha!!!

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Thursday, January 12, 2012 - 02:13 pm:

Looking at these photos, which by the way are great, got me to thinking about the differences in dogs and cats. Say, you pick up your cat and you tell him that you're gonna put this harness around his neck, you're gonna take him out into the snow (you can imagine what kind of look that would bring in itself), attach him to all the other cats' harnesses, then attach them all to a sled, and then tell them to RUN, they'd roll their eyes at you and say "You have got to be kiddin'!";> I have a cat....I know!

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Thursday, January 12, 2012 - 02:41 pm:

Cats were once worshiped by the Egyptians as gods.... they have not forgotten this!!

By Alex "UP-Goldwinger" (Alex) on Thursday, January 12, 2012 - 02:52 pm:

Cats are stronger than you think.

Capt, have you ever heard of this place?

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Thursday, January 12, 2012 - 03:10 pm:

Yeah, I know, Capt., my cat still believes that he should be worshipped. And yep, Alex, I can attest to cats being strong..he can be lying quietly in my lap, totally content, then the telephone in the kitchen rings and he bounds out of my lap almost disjointing my limbs.;> Plus, I have bruises to prove it.

By Kathyrn Laughlin (Kathyl) on Thursday, January 12, 2012 - 04:13 pm:

Hi
I used to have an Alaskan Malemute, and she showed a marked lack of enthusiasm for having a harness on the few times we tried it with her. Malemutes were not bred for racing, instead they were more for freight. Not that she didn't have a competative streak; she hated having anyone ahead of her when we walked or skiied. In fact she body-checked my dad once when he was cross-country skiing. Maybe we should have tried her at hockey.

By Dr. Nat (Drnat) on Thursday, January 12, 2012 - 06:39 pm:

Nice photos! I love the flags at the finish line. All three are countries to which I have close ties.

By kosk in Toronto (Koskintoronto) on Thursday, January 12, 2012 - 08:14 pm:

Dr. Nat: Are you a dual citizen? What's the connection with
Norway? (If I may be so bold as to ask?)

By Dr. Nat (Drnat) on Thursday, January 12, 2012 - 09:29 pm:

Kosk, my family is from Norway (and Germany). They came to North America in 1969 because my father was offered a job here. I guess I could explain the flags this way-- Norway is my family home, I lived in Canada in the past, and the United States is my current home.

By kosk in Toronto (Koskintoronto) on Friday, January 13, 2012 - 05:14 am:

Thank you, Dr. Nat. I thought I sensed the Canadian connection.
Someplace in the Maritimes?

By Dr. Nat (Drnat) on Friday, January 13, 2012 - 11:28 am:

I don't know how you deduced the Maritimes, but yes, I was in New Brunswick.

By Therese (Therese) on Friday, January 13, 2012 - 03:48 pm:

The third flag should be for Finland. ...you
know, at the Finnish line. :D

By Therese (Therese) on Friday, January 13, 2012 - 03:51 pm:

The third flag at the racetrack end should be Finnish.
