Brenda Leigh braved the cold, wind and snow on New Year's Day, to photograph the 2nd Annual Polar Bear Plunge at the Menominee Marina, but at least she was fully dressed. The organizers were touting this event as Da Yooper Plunge and entrants had to register and raise money to participate. The money went to the River Cities Community Pool Association, to run their community pool and programs. You can see by Brenda's photos, that the event drew quite a crowd and the organizers had an excavator on hand to break up the ice along the shore for the entry point, while the rescue workers helped move the ice out of the way. The crowds started arriving closer to the starting time and finally the participants dressed in their Hawaiian and summer attire arrived on the shore, working up the courage to finally run into the water and dive right under! I know it's all for a good cause, but with 34° water temperatures, you wouldn't catch me out there. Kudos to the hardy folks who did take the PLUNGE!

Oh man, they have Polar Bear events in other areas, but this is the REAL deal. Not to mention these people are out of their minds. But it was all for a good cause!

I like the guy in the 4th picture with the coconuts and hula skirt. LOL..such costumes are funny.
I wonder if the Portage canal will be frozen enough, for the polar dive, this year.

After looking at the photos of the human polar bears, I've come to the conclusion that all the squirrels are not up in the trees !!!
