These shots were snapped by Urpo Vuorinen, about a mile or so, east of Eagle River, with temperatures in the teens and 40 mph plus winds. After reading that in Urpo's email, I was thinking that he was a pretty brave man to be standing out there snapping photos with the weather raging around him like that. Here's what he had to say about the day:
"Mother Nature was calling for me to come out and play beach ball with her but I could only manage some pictures before my fingers wouldn't function very well in the cold. The ice balls ranged in size from one inch to over 3 ft. in diameter. By the next day they were gone or frozen into the icy bank. I guess Mother Nature took her beach balls and left because I wouldn't play with her."
Interesting formations indeed, sitting there looking like frosted rocks along the shoreline. Yet another remarkable product of our Great Lake Superior!
