Yesterday Charlie mentioned a fundraising event held over the weekend to benefit Amy Roberts, a 32 year old wife and mother who was struck by a car while jogging. She suffered a traumatic brain injury, has had two surgeries, and remains in a coma. That's Amy in the first photo with her son Keedin and her husband Buster, taken by Dorothy Jamison just a few days before the accident. Over 100 volunteers came together (organized by fellow workers from Aspirus Keweenaw) in an effort to raise money for Amy, to help with medical expenses that result from such a serious injury. At last count I was told there were around 700 runners and walkers Saturday morning, ready to get underway, as you can see in the 2nd and 3rd photos from E. Neil Harri.

The next two shots come from Gowtham, who was actually up in the bucket of the ladder truck you can just see in Neil's two shots from the air. Gowtham's photos show the very start of the run/walk and a group of runners as they round a corner toward the end of the 5k event. I was told these young people are part of a Nordic Ski group in the area (maybe someone can chime in with the group's name).

The last two pictures come from Shanda Miller, with everyone milling about during the silent auction that followed, inside the Irish Times Restaurant in Laurium. Then there's one of the signs that someone carried throughout the run/walk.

This is what living in the Copper Country is all about... coming together to help a fellow Yooper in need, showing support in any way we can. I was one of those people in that crowd, walking along with friends, smiling and greeting people we knew and those we didn't know. It was definitely a moving experience and I don't mean just physically. Events like this raise a good chunk of money (this one around $20,000 at last count), but they also give folks an opportunity to get involved as a community and show we care. Please keep Amy and her family in your prayers.

What a supportive community to gather together to help Amy and her family. Kudos to the Copper Country! Amy and her family and friends have been in our thoughts and prayers since this has happened. May she have a miraculous recovery! A big thank you to all four on the great photos.

May the Lord wake Amy up soon, and may He give Keedin and Buster the strength they need beforehand. They are a beautiful family and have the need to be whole once again. Prayers and hope offered up. And may God bless all those who participated in their run for another's life!

It's awesome what a group of Yoopers can do. I'm praying for a speeedy and complete recovery for Amy. What a great amount of friends she has:) It's so heartwarming!

I forgot to mention in my notes that a fund has been set up at The Michigan Tech Employees Federal Credit Union in Houghton for those wishing to donate to help Amy and her family. Donations can be sent to 700 E. Sharon Ave., Houghton, MI 49931 in the care of Amy Roberts.

There will also be a pancake breakfast, on Jan. 14th, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the Waterfront (Ramada), in Hancock.

I'm so proud of our local communities, coming together like this to help people in need.

Thank you, Mary, for that address....answered my question! I'm not a UPer but would like to help. Believe me, I know about hospital expenses and also how precious a life is!

My sister and friend and I particpated, and my friend said that we should do a fitness walk for everyone that we want to rally support for. Some of us cannot participate in dinners/breakfasts because of dietary restrictions. I wish we could start up a foundation and have one of these every other month or so to donate to a local recipient in need. A nice way to promote good health while not putting a great deal of financial burden on anyone..yet offering great support to those in need. Something to think about since we Yoopers do like to take care of our own! Keeping Amy and her family in prayer and Godspeed on her recovery! I am honored to have been able to participate.
