What a contrast in these scenes captured by our friend Paul Roberts from Mohawk. In the first shot he was heading down the off-ramp toward Dollar Bay as you leave Hancock. Then we have a loftier view in the same direction. A common element in each photo is the steam rising from the plant at Michigan Tech. Paul now has 250 interesting shots of the area in his Guest Gallery album.

We gave Mary a head start on the weekend. If you're traveling over the holiday, be alert - stay safe.

Have a Good Friday :o)

steam or coal burning without a scrubber for polution

By Mel, Kansas on Friday, March 25, 2005 - 09:20 am:

ts:

Certainly not coal. Don't know for certain what the steam plant (which is what it is - produces the steam to heat all of campus) runs on, but I believe it's natural gas or fuel oil.

Good pictures! I was riding on that road (in the first picture) 3 months ago. The second picture is absolutely magnificient!

Happy Easter!

By Paul Roberts, Mohawk on Friday, March 25, 2005 - 10:31 am:

John (from the prairie),

Actually last year wasnt really bad until later in the summer. I still remember that a week before July 4 I was wearing my carhart. It was quite nippy. In fact, snowflakes were spotted in certian areas. I'm hoping for a summer like last year as I love the cooler temps and the rain makes grass grow which helps me earn money during the summer months. Have a Happy Easter!

MTU's steam plant operates on natural gas, tho' for a backup system oil is standing by....

Even the best fossil fuel burning facilities with state of the art scrubbers cannot eliminate releasing steam into the atmosphere. Judging from the plume's color, I doubt if there are any effluents being emitted, as well. Since, as stated, this is a plant for steam heating, burning natural gas, it poses little impact for NOx emmissions. At least no more than several households trying to keep warm.

By AJ - WI on Friday, March 25, 2005 - 12:17 pm:

I have been wondering. Are the "stone steps" at the end of the Hancock side of the Portage Lake Lift Bridge still there? If so, does anyone have a picture of them? If not, would someone take a picture of them? I would be more appreciative!! I have a lot of childhood memories of the "stone steps."

By Ron, Michigan on Friday, March 25, 2005 - 01:21 pm:

Regarding Tech's steam plant: No matter the fuel source, with stack gas temps upwards of 250 degrees, a "vapor trail", not steam plume, will be evident in the colder months of the year.

By Doug, IN on Friday, March 25, 2005 - 01:21 pm:

When you see a clean white plume coming from the stack of a coal-fired plant, you can bet that it uses scrubbers to get rid of pollutants. The scrubbers actually add moisture to the exhaust and increase the steam. If the exhaust is nearly invisible, with a hazy gray look to it, it is not scrubbed. Also, scrubbers are used to get rid of sulfur dioxide emissions for the most part, not NOx. Nitrogen oxides are generally removed through other means.
