Without knowing which direction our cameraman, Roger Kangas, was facing, it's difficult to determine whether this is a sunrise or a sunset. Whichever it is, there sure is a good representation of what the snow gets to looking like this time of year, with thawing from the sun being closer during the day, then allowing the frigid temps to return as soon as it drops below the horizon. I'm leaning more towards a sunrise, since the drip from the icy opening seems to be frozen in time. That single, clear icicle gives us all hope that with the arrival of Spring on our Pasty Cam Calendars, the U.P. ice mounds and towering snowbanks will commence melting soon!

Looks good to me, up or down.

By smf in troll land on Monday, March 21, 2005 - 07:05 am:

Neat picture!

By Brent, hey where'd the sun go?, UPstate NY on Monday, March 21, 2005 - 07:43 am:

Hmm, UP or Antarctica?

By Mac, Ohio on Monday, March 21, 2005 - 07:47 am:

Mary,
Unless the photo is reversed, I'd bet it's late afternoon. Note that the sun appears to be to the left (South). Interesting shot in any case.

By Sue, Calumet on Monday, March 21, 2005 - 08:20 am:

Definitely not Antarctica--too many clouds. Read Russ Alger's comparison of Antarctica and Keweenaw:

Or the camera could be pointing Southeast. There are no real references to orient the viewer, but I agree with Mary that the ice isnt dripping actively, therefore it is below freezing and morning. Is this taken amoung the piles of ice built up along the lake? I am doing my spring cleaning as the sun outside is doing its cleaning up of the snow. More evaporation than melting this time of year at these still-cold temps.

Beautiful picture Roger. You did it again. Thanks for sharing.

By Sarah, Central WI on Monday, March 21, 2005 - 08:41 am:

That is gorgeous!

By Roger's wife on Monday, March 21, 2005 - 08:48 am:

This picture was taken in the afternoon. I don't know which way he was facing, but i remember it was in the afternoon, because he had taken one of the boys for a ride on the snowmobile. Doesn't the ice "window" look a bit like the shape of the U.P.? He took it somewhere in the Sedar Bay area.

By Nate, Norway,MI on Monday, March 21, 2005 - 09:15 am:

That has got to be one of the coolest pictures I have ever seen!

By Marsha, Genesee/Aura on Monday, March 21, 2005 - 10:35 am:

I, too, thought it looked vaguely like a U.P. map when I saw the small picture of it on the home page. Remember, I said vaguely!

Is that a frozen alligator on the left? Hope Roger escaped before that guy thawed out!

;)

By Audrey, San Jose, CA on Monday, March 21, 2005 - 12:16 pm:

Beautiful picture today!!! I love the colors of the sky.

By Mac, Ohio on Monday, March 21, 2005 - 01:49 pm:

Therese,
I stand humbly corrected. The gray matter isn't too swift early in the day, and not much better later.

By pam, fruitport on Monday, March 21, 2005 - 02:02 pm:

Thanks Roger for the Brillant picture and your wife for fine tuning the location... It looks west and sunset time.... Infinitely Beautiful!!!!

By Roger's wife on Monday, March 21, 2005 - 02:19 pm:

It was late afternoon/early eve. 5 or 6 ish. Sunset. Near the Gratiot. I guess that is Sedar Bay area!

By sur5er on Monday, March 21, 2005 - 02:24 pm:

Beautiful pic...I agree with Brent that it almost looks the like Antartica. Brrrrrr....

By elm on Monday, March 21, 2005 - 02:49 pm:

Kind of looks like a moose head on the right hand side of the picture.

By Beverly, San Jose on Monday, March 21, 2005 - 03:17 pm:

Who cares what direction it is facing, all I have to say is that is one awesome picture.

By Sandi MI on Monday, March 21, 2005 - 05:01 pm:

John W... the panoramics are great. How did you do those.. if you dont' mind my asking? Thank you.

By bea salem mi on Monday, March 21, 2005 - 06:21 pm:

that's just one more of those U.P. views that keep me homesick. Reminds me of why I'm moving back up there.

By Down State Dave on Monday, March 21, 2005 - 08:31 pm:

Mr. Kangas --- kudos. Great picture today!

By John Canton Mi on Monday, March 21, 2005 - 08:52 pm:

I'm feeling proud....I *knew* this was a Roger shot before I even opened it up! Great shot Roger! The framing is top notch!

By Charlie at Pasty Central on Tuesday, March 22, 2005 - 06:40 am:

jAPEi, I've been trying to figure out if something got lost in the translation. But I suppose if somebody saw an alligator in Monday's shot, other shapes are possible.

I also want to thank John Wrycza for the panorama on Brockway. This winter has been the first with Pasty.NET's solar-wind powered wireless broadband relay on the mountain, and I've been wondering what conditions were like.

By John Wrycza, Illinois on Wednesday, March 23, 2005 - 09:43 pm:

panoramic shots - take a few pictures, then import them into Adobe PhotoShop CS, file/automate/photomerge - it'll find the matching edges for you. The tough part is getting the exposures correct.
I'll try it with a tripod next time!
