Looks like something out of Buck Rogers... This was an experimental machine which touched down at the Airport a number of decades ago, as R.C. Wetton reported the old news clipping in his guest album:

BOARDING the marsh screw type vehicle was this group of the American and Canadian military leaders, industrial personnel and educators viewing testing operations yesterday at the Keweenaw Field Station now operated by Michigan Tech. Many local residents as well saw this piece of equipment in operation.
Nowadays we know the testing area at the Airport as MTU's Keweenaw Research Center, which had its share of high-tech visitors last week during the 2005 "Clean Snowmobile Challenge".

Besides the crowds at Houghton County Airport, the Copper Country Mall was also a busy place Saturday, as the Kiwanis Club presented "Family Day". Pasty.NET was there, providing high-speed Internet service (wirelessly) for the Portage Lake Library's display. Quite a busy time for winter's last weekend in the Keweenaw.

I also wanted to thank everyone for the birthday greetings in yesterday's What'sUP. Special thanks to "tom tc mich" for the link to Gateway to Astronaut Photography. We were able to quickly navigate their clickable map and find the place we call home.

Yippee! I know I'll never be that high up to see it for real, this is just as good.

WOW! The NASA photo takes my breath away. That "finger" of Keweenaw testing the waters of Lake Superior is probably finding it still too cold for a swim :>.

By Joe Tampa on Sunday, March 20, 2005 - 10:35 am:

Looks good with no snow.

Woops--the "v" word above is supposed to be "vault" of course!

By Terry Hamka, Kalamazoo MI on Sunday, March 20, 2005 - 11:46 am:

an absolutely awesome picture of the Keweenaw. I am counting down the days till mid August when I cna get back up to Houghton and points north. I am 50, back in school full time at WMU, and life is hectic to say the least. My 2 weeks in August spent wandering the Keweenaw is my sanity break, sleeping on the Gratiot or Montreal Rivers, visiting the mine dumps, or 2-tracking on the tip. I envy those who can live there full time. I'll see if this year I can find the old copper falls mine!

By Cindy Calumet,Michigan on Sunday, March 20, 2005 - 11:52 am:

I wish someone would send in some pictures of all the deer in Cedar Bay. When I was there,I seen at least 200 of them. Believe it or not!

By Charlie and Edie in Eagle River on Sunday, March 20, 2005 - 12:07 pm:

L. Hart, I wouldn't be two concerned about the spelling glitch, because you had the first and last letter correct, which apparently is all that matters:

As lnog as the fsirt and lsat lreetts are crcoret, the rset wlil be hlaednd bauecse the mnid deos not raed the iniddivaul ltteers.
We send a Happy Birthday to Bill Penprase as well.

Also, Lois, your note reminded me to mention that the Spring Ladies' Retreat was this weekend at Camp Gitche Gumee here in Eagle River. Things have been getting busy all over the Copper Country!
By Stuart in Michigan on Sunday, March 20, 2005 - 12:09 pm:

Interesting sattalite veiw of the Keweenaw.

By Cousin Jack on Sunday, March 20, 2005 - 03:20 pm:

All of Bill Penprase's recollections from his time spent in the Keweenaw have been Pasty Cam posts well worth savoring (and remembering) over the past few years.
Thanks for the memories, Bill!

This machine can be David Brown factory product!
Icebreaker!

By RCW on Sunday, March 20, 2005 - 06:42 pm:

Can't quite recall exactly, Alex but it was early 60s. I should have dated them!!

By FLYINDAILY on Sunday, March 20, 2005 - 06:56 pm:

Maybe mid 60's......I don't recall that exact machine, but there was one called the Snowbird or Keybird or something..circa 1965......alcohol may have been involved......It certainly was in the design and construction of this machine.....LOL

By billy bob,flint on Sunday, March 20, 2005 - 07:17 pm:

so did the thing work or not?

By copper country resident on Sunday, March 20, 2005 - 07:58 pm:

RCW-you've had many airport & related items on the Pasty Cam before. Just how long have you been connected with the airline profession. How are you connected with the Houghton County Airport???

By RCW on Sunday, March 20, 2005 - 08:07 pm:

CC Resident. Well I started working for the county at CMX in late 1958 and in late 1960 I started with NCA and put in 25 years untill deregulation allowed Republic to pull out in 1985.When I started at the county in 58 there were only 2 of us there, and all we had was gas truck, a pickup, and some snow shovels to keep the runway lights open. At that time the road commision would come up once a day and plow one runway 13-31. Those were fun fun days!!

By Keweenaw gal on Sunday, March 20, 2005 - 08:36 pm:

Joe Tampa, what are you saying, "NO SNOW???" Why, it is still snowmobiling and skiing weather here!

By HELEN,UPPER MI on Sunday, March 20, 2005 - 10:41 pm:

What a fantastic picture!! I just love it.

By Ken ja Mimi from da UP on Sunday, March 20, 2005 - 10:48 pm:

Hei RCW, I remember those screw machines, too. I think they were at Tech at one of their open houses or ?? Very early snow mobile and they would float but didn't travel very fast on the water. Seems they could turn around on a dime, one screw turned one way, the other in reverse. I thought they were there in the late 50s or very early 60s.
