Thanks to one of our youngest Pasty Cammers, Ashley Byykkonen, those of us who weren't able to attend the Lake Linden-Hubbell Schools annual Fun Day out at the School Forest last weekend, can still get a glimpse of the recreation enjoyed by all! What with snowmobile rides, skiing through the tall pines, bird watching, a bonfire and tours courtesy of Big Blue, it looks like a perfect day for family fun and togetherness. My personal favorite would have been the trailer ride pulled by the New Holland tractor. Of course, I'd have rather been in the driver's seat than the rider, since I know it has lots more bells and whistles than my Ford 9N. Check out Ashley's slideshow, it gives you a real taste of what the day was all about.

Great Slideshow of all the fun!

No new snow to report on in the Keweenaw. I don't hear anyone complaining. :)

New changes in the law make it possable for the school to sell the forest. I hope they don't because it offers so many opertunities for learning. Too many people don't get close to nature anymore.

Also like the "Ford" (now New Holland) tractor.

Looks like a fun day and bunch to me.

By moi on Saturday, March 19, 2005 - 08:54 am:

Awesome that the school sees the value in this!
It's true...many kids never get out of town.
This is something you won't learn in front of a video screen.

ok, where is the school forest? I grew up in Lake Linden and cannot imagine where it is. Help!!!!!

By Gus LL on Saturday, March 19, 2005 - 10:35 am:

The property where the Lake Linden School Forest is located, was a fairly large open field at one time. I believe it was Marcotte's farm.
I hunted deer with bow & arrow along the edge of the cleared fields. That was in the 1950s. Sam Eddy bought the farm later and I believe he planted the pine trees there.
He later donated the property to the Lake Linden Hubbell Schools and is used by them for a great outdoor educational program.

For those of you interested in more info about the Lake Linden-Hubbell School Forest, check out this link: LLHS Website

Here's another link about the School Forest - from the National Woodlands newsletter put out by the National Forestry Assoc. LLHS recieved America's First Volkswoods Award, this link is to the article about it! When it loads, look in the column on the left, then click on the 10th line "Publication Archives", find July 2002, click on that...then again in the left column click on: First Volkswood, p. 10 Sorry for the lengthy directions, but for some reason it wouldn't link directly to that page!

Jean,

'School Forest' is not actually the name of the forest, but a name that the locals gave it. I know that John Dee talks about it quite a bit in his hiking and snowmobiling journals.

I'm sure the Plainfield, Wisconsin school where some of my grandkids attend, have had a school forest for quite a few years. What a marvelous learning opportunity!

I bet the ride in the wagon is fun. Do they offer rides all the time or just on special occasions? Did those deer get fed yesterday? They looked hungry.

The Milwaukee School System owns BOTH a forest (Potter's Forest) and a farm (Oakridge Farm) so that city kids can get a taste of another lifestyle. No electricity, outhouses, pumps for faucets. The kids usually adapt well, it's the dads that get squeamish!!! ROFL

Hey Toivo,

Glad to read you are an old Ford Tractor guy. Between my Dad and I, we have 4 of them: 8N, NAA, 600, and a 3000. They run forever. When I was at Tech, the old 8N cleared lots of snow, have a good one.
