Lake effect weather    ...scroll down to share comments

Mary Drew perusing the flea markets of Florida on Monday, March 7, 2005 - 06:04 am:

Here's a scene we often see here in the Upper Peninsula during the winter months. Snow clouds and snow obliterating the sun, making it seem like evening before it really is. Looking at the properties of this photo by Joyce Tormala, you can see that it was taken somewhere around 6:00 p.m., which, this time of year is not quite dark yet usually. But when lake effect snow and clouds converge in the sky, darkness falls a bit earlier than usual with only a peek from the setting sun every now and again to brighten things up. Before you know it, things will be much brighter as the days have been getting continually longer as we head toward spring.

The sun has been doing lots of shining here on the Gulf of Mexico side of Florida. We've been enjoying the warmer weather during the day and when the temperatures cool for the evening, it's nice to be able to hook up my laptop and connect back home with Pasty.net Nationwide Dial-In. Then I can keep posted on happenings back up north. Congratulations to the Hancock Bulldogs for your regional Hockey championship, and good luck on your way toward the state finals! For the game in the Soo on Wednesday night, we'll be able to tune in K-Bear 102 by way of Pasty.NET.

By Terry Hamka, Kalamazoo MI on Monday, March 7, 2005 - 07:31 am:

What a gorgeous picture. I really miss the days when I lived with my folks at MTU. I am so homesick for the Keweenaw. The lake is so incredibly beautiful in the winter with all the ice on the shores. I can't wait till the summer when I can get there and spend some time camping on Lake Superior and hanging out at the mine dumps again.

By Skylar in WI on Monday, March 7, 2005 - 08:16 am:

Cool. Looking forward to next week when I'll be back up again. Can't wait. Later, Skylar.

Bluff

By Deb on Monday, March 7, 2005 - 03:23 pm:

Nice picture Dave. Is it the view from "The Bluffs"? Imagine having that view from your living room window!

By sur5er on Monday, March 7, 2005 - 04:02 pm:

Dave,

Waaaaaaaaaa!Sniffle...sniffle....waaaaaaaaaaaa!

By Joyce Tormala Toivola on Monday, March 7, 2005 - 04:29 pm:

This picture was taken at Agate Beach in Toivola.I crouched on my knees behind the snowbank and, with shaking hands, pulled the handy little camera out of my pocket. I was scooping snow in the yard when I noticed a bright sundog, so I hopped into the car (with the dog) and drove to the beach. In a matter of minutes the sky was rearranged. The blue landscape quickly turned gray. Though it could have lasted longer, it was a good show. It was EXTREMELY cold by the big lake,so I spent most of the time inside the car. Waah,waah-poor me,eh. Back to reality I went,to finish scooping by the light of the dusk-to-dawn.
Thanks for posting the picture;more thanks for the inspiring comments.

By Therese from just below the bridge on Monday, March 7, 2005 - 05:10 pm:

That is one dramatic photo! I copied it to disk and will try to capture it in watercolors. Let's see, a little cobalt blue and ultramarine, some rose madder ...

By Fred, Three Lakes on Monday, March 7, 2005 - 06:15 pm:

Real nice picture Joyce!

By Barb, Michigan on Monday, March 7, 2005 - 06:38 pm:

The magic of the Keweenaw and Lake Superior. This is a lovely picture and thanks for sharing it.

By sur5er on Monday, March 7, 2005 - 06:39 pm:

Joyce,

Aaaaah, the trouble we go through for the perfect shot, eh...but it is usually well worth it, as is evident with your pic here. ;)

By John-Canton Mi on Monday, March 7, 2005 - 09:36 pm:

Agate Beach, visit it a couple times a year.
Great place with solitude as its signature.
Have`nt seen it in the winter before. Great shot!!!!

By Ken ja Mimi from da UP on Monday, March 7, 2005 - 09:43 pm:

Nice one, Dave. Is that Sharon Ave. headin' off to da right? Nice top pic, too, Joyce. Temp here in Cornell yesterday was 53°, snow really goin' down, driveway getting muddy. Today, the wind is really blowin' cold and my driveway needs the Cub Cadet again.

By Dave,Laurium on Monday, March 7, 2005 - 11:23 pm:

Ken, yup,u betcha, dat be da Sharon Ave area to da rite. I took the pic from up at the Bluffs assisted living area. Really is a great view from up there. Maybe I had put my reservation in ahead of time for a place there later on down the road :>)

Since the top photo shows a form of weather, there's a page from the Dominion of Canada's Weather Network website that gives weather reports for Copper Harbor, Houghton, Hancock, and Calumet:
