The Keweenaw gets more than its share of snow in the winter, in fact the whole U.P. gets enough of the white stuff to have to change your driving habits. Luckily we have good road crews to keep the highways and byways clear and ready for travel. This S-curve caught snaking up the incline by Donn de Yampert, is one of the classic examples of where you need to drive with care. Of course if you do start slipping and sliding the snowbanks will keep you from heading into the ditch! I'm hoping this curve stretches out straight as you head around the last bend, since the first sign on the right says, 'Pass with Care'. Heed the road signs and drive defensively!

My hubby and I have been taking turns with the driving on our trip down South. Of course there's no snow to make the driving tricky, but those six and seven lane highways are something else! I'm glad I don't have to worry about how I'm going to handle finding reliable internet access while on the road, with just a local phone call. Thanks to Pasty.net and the Nationwide Dial-In I can make my connection to the U.P. wherever I lay my head for the night!

Good eye...they are snow mobilers.

By Jerry da Yooper in Trollville! on Friday, March 4, 2005 - 07:47 am:

I can tell that this is a picture taken in God's country......#1- There are no snowbanks down here below the bridge & #2- If this picture were taken down here there would be several cars in da banks or ditch on both sides of the road! Trolls drive crazy! There is a reason my car insurance doubled since I moved down here in November......

Whenever I have a hanker to see the UP(after living there for 30 years),and the Pasty Cam pictures are not enough, I take a drive out to the Sodus/Rose area here in Western NY, its exactly the same.

The road to Point Mills, the old Atlas Powder Dupont Plant is where I learned to drive in the snow.DYNOMITE sure was glad to have a snow bank for the 53 Ford to jump in.Here in Tennessee we don't have many passing zones, nothing but double yellow lines. These S. Hillbilly's take a half hour looking for thier socks, get behind the wheel and drive like He-double toothpicks.Oh my if we got snow like in this picture i'd get in the junkyard business too!You N.Hillbilly's drive carefull now.Glad you read my story, take your shoes off, you'all come back to this site now ya hear.

Thanks Yooper Judy. I'll tell the customers in our store too...there are many Yoopers who come to Florida in the winter.

jAPEi- You make me smile.

By Doug the Troll, Wixom, MI on Friday, March 4, 2005 - 06:31 pm:

The best part is they MOVE your snow up there, instead of hitting it with tons of salt hoping it'll melt. If not the slush that'lll get us "down stater's" - it'll be the pot holes from all that salt! My 2 cents worth.

By YOOPER LOVER on Friday, March 4, 2005 - 06:45 pm:

WANT TO BE THERE NOW!!!! GEEZ LOOKS LIKE FUN ALL THAT SNOW! AND SNOWMOBILING! BUT OH WELL STUCK DOWN HERE FOR A FEW MORE WEEKS THEN I WILL BE MAKING A TRIP UP THERE IM HOPING THERE WILL STILL BE SNOW! BUT IM SURE I DONT HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT THAT! WE DID GET QUITE A BIT OF SNOW DOWN HERE IN THE PAST WEEK BUT NO WHERE NEAR AS MUCH AS IS DWELLING UP THERE! :) WELL CANT WAIT TO MAKE IT UP THERE! TELL ME HOW THE WEATHERS SOPPOSED TO BE AT THE END OF MARCH!! THANKS!

By Yooper lifer on Friday, March 4, 2005 - 09:15 pm:

Doug the Troll

Yes, they do move the snow up here, and do a good job, but believe me, they use plenty of salt. It's almost pointless to wash your car unless you can be sure of at least one day of dry roads. Even then, it's off with the old salt and on with the new! And we have pot holes that you could get lost in!

By Paul on Friday, March 4, 2005 - 10:13 pm:

Old new mill road , thats my guess . Just renovated by the Houghton County Road Commission. An adventure anytime of year. The thing about the the old road that I remembered
was that it channelled spring run off into a fated white house on the north side of canal road near the portage. Sand and runoff debris
piled high, wish I had a photo . LL are you out there?

I posted a note earlier this evening to jAIPi. In looking at the messages at 11:30, the note does not appear. What happened?

Shirley,

It must have gotten lost in cyberspace, because we can't find any messages from your IP address prior to this one. Perhaps you saw the preview, but, as jAPEi might say, the postfinal (made it) did not.

By Russ E. St. Clair & Kalkaska countys on Saturday, March 5, 2005 - 02:08 am:

Hey, there is a section of Cedar River Road north of Mancelona in Antrim county (NWLP) that looks EXACTLY like this photo. Snowbanks equally the same or more! Dave H. in Tenn.--- you've been there--you remember! And is not far from our cabin in Kalkaska county which is in the well known NWLP lake effect snow belt where we usually get 3 to 5 ft. every winter! Snowmobilers mecca!
Was in downtown St. Clair last night here down in SELP. Snowbanks WAY over my head all over, despite dumping a lot in the St. Clair River! This area here south of Port Huron towards Anchor Bay is also a smaller lake effect snow belt. They say this winter has been the 3rd snowiest winter on record in this area! We are supposed to get more tonight again! When will it ever end?

By HELEN, MI on Saturday, March 5, 2005 - 11:55 am:

Another great picutre from Donn DeYampert, best regards to you!
That best describes alot of the road UP here as of now!! It's starting to warm up a wee bit now. But......we are still in for the famous St. Paddy's Day snowstorm yet??
