Good morning from snowy Hancock....yesterday proved to be a beautiful cold sunny winter day in the Keeweenaw...today is a typical cold snowy day in the Keeweenaw...Spring is a long way off I suppose.
First Post

By kosk in Toronto on Sunday, February 27, 2005 - 08:05 am:

Looks like Spring is a long way off here too,
though we are not expecting a foot of snow...
It was nippy (-14C) this morning when I took
the dog for his walk. The moon was beautiful.

By gw-houghton on Sunday, February 27, 2005 - 08:21 am:

Good Morning to all, looks like we are getting dumped on this morning. (Snow that is) 18 degrees at our house, our dogs didn't want to stay outside too long. Have a great day!

By Victoria, K.I. Sawyer on Sunday, February 27, 2005 - 08:22 am:

Nothing for snow here in K.I. ... yet. That doesn't mean that we won't get some later though. Off to bed with me!

By Ed, WV on Sunday, February 27, 2005 - 08:24 am:

Sure missed NHL hockey this year. Is there professional or semi-professional hockey in the UP?
Also, how is the Calumet High School hockey team doing? What was their W-L record this year? And is there any chance on CHS going to the finals. The on-line Daily Mining Gazette does not cover local sports in detail - standings etc.

By Helen, Hancock on Sunday, February 27, 2005 - 09:20 am:

Did you attend the old Pewabic School? If so, on Saturday, August 6, 2005, at the Quincy FireHall, there will be an informal reunion of ALL who attended the school. Right now the goal is to create a guest list of people we can contact about the event. Your part in this is to send along an e-mail to: hmchamber@webtv.net (Helen Aittama Chamberlain), with names and addresses, if you have any, of others you remember who attended the school when you did.

THANKS, and really looking forward to seeing you at the Pewabic School reunion.

By Margaret, Amarillo TX on Sunday, February 27, 2005 - 09:50 am:

Mornin', looks like the team is a bit steamy.

By JoAnne Stefanac, Washington state on Sunday, February 27, 2005 - 11:25 am:

I'm with Ed; WV, bummed that the online version of the Gazette doesn't cover more of the local (high school) sports! For us away-from-homers, it sure would be nice to be able to check that site for such info.

So, how are the Copper Kings doing this year?

By CHS fan on Sunday, February 27, 2005 - 01:17 pm:

Kings finished the year with 11-11-2. They are playing some of their best hockey now. They lost games to Brighton (2 games), Novi (2 games), Cranbrook (2 games), an early season game to Mqt., a Holiday tournament game to Houghton, and i don't recall the others. They've been having success against the local teams. The regional tournament could be anyone's! Calumet will have to watch out for Hancock is my guess.

By Ed, WV on Sunday, February 27, 2005 - 03:48 pm:

To CHS fan - Thanks from ED/WV and JoAnne/Washington for the update on the Copper Kings. I always look forward to a re-cap of the play-off or regional tournaments and hope that you will do this for the CHS yoopers who look to this as a source for news.
Thanks again.

Dear JAPEi,

I bet many of the people who check Pasty.com
on a daily basis would join me in saying we
are happy you check this site. Many of us wish
we knew more than a few words and
expressions in the language of our ancestors.

Will you be coming to FinnFest this summer?

By John Heikkila on Sunday, February 27, 2005 - 08:06 am:

jAPEi, no need to apologize. Your English is much better than my Finnish.

By Marsha, Genesee/Aura on Sunday, February 27, 2005 - 08:25 am:

Welcome, Japei. I'm always happy to see your posts no matter what language they're in. I can't speak or read Finnish, but it certainly adds ambience to this page! Have a great day!

By Margaret, Amarillo TX on Sunday, February 27, 2005 - 09:49 am:

Mornin'. jAPEi: had to learn another American dialect when we moved here to Texas. Glad you join the page when you can.

27° here this morning. They say it will rain later. No snow for weeks.

By Herb_NW_Wis on Sunday, February 27, 2005 - 09:54 am:

Japei,

I like your English. It comes across with an old world
flavor. Thanks.

I don't know the old car, but could it be so clean because
they didn't use melting salt back then? Just a guess. Or
maybe the owner just took it out of the garage for a ride
to church on Sunday. I guess in the early days they'd
drain the radiatior and put the car up on blocks for the
winter. But that may have been earlier. That picture
looks like the 1930s when cars were very cool.

3-4 inches of fresh snow overnight in NW Wis. I guess
more is on the way. I don't mind. When it goes it will go
FAST.

By Peg in Green Bay on Sunday, February 27, 2005 - 10:41 am:

Japei,

Welcome to Pasty Cam! We have a son, daughter-in-law and three grandkids in Kerava. I travel once a year to your beautiful country. I'm trying to learn Finnish a little at a time. The grandkids are growing up bilingual which is fantastic.

By Stefani, IL on Sunday, February 27, 2005 - 12:23 pm:

JAPEI,

Please don't stop making posts in Finnish. There are some of out here that are trying to learn. I like to pass these on to relatives that do not have a computer and enjoy reading the first language they learned.

By yiwi on Sunday, February 27, 2005 - 01:28 pm:

Japei

By PK, MI on Sunday, February 27, 2005 - 01:47 pm:

Great old pic! Sure do enjoy these blasts from the past. Japei, thanks for the link to Alahärmä parish! Welcome to our overseas visitors. Post your messages in Finnish, there are quite a few visitors to this website who know Finn and can translate for you. (on muutamia vakinaisia pasty.com vierailijoita jotka osaavat suomea ja voisimme kääntä viestiäsi englanneksi)Are there any similar websites in Finland where we can view daily pictures?

Re: webcams in Finland. The Finnish Road Administration has cams set up all over Finland where you can check the weather and road conditions. Some sites are aimed at towns and others are in remote areas. Of course you might be lucky to catch a reindeer or moose crossing the road in Lapland. I visit the cams in Tornio and Oulu hoping to see one of my relavies drive by ;-)

Thanks for the link to Niklas' new site!
I was wondering where Niklas disappeared to, his former site (http://www.helsinki.fi/~nsjoblom/maisema/index_eng.html) seems to have gone away.

Flashbacks about what?

By kosk in Toronto on Sunday, February 27, 2005 - 09:09 pm:

Candy,

No, I'm afraid I'm not a Koskela kosk. Kosk
was my nickname at university for a much
longer Finnish last name.

Once I finish writing report cards, I'll have to
check out some of the Finnish web sites.

By Beverly, San Jose on Monday, February 28, 2005 - 12:36 am:

I think it was a week ago when I told you my car was hit by a snow bank. Well, tonight it was hit by a wall of water. I can't win. The rain is coming down so hard you can hardly see in front of you. After a few nice warm days, we are back to winter grey and rain.

"CMX now has commuter jet service ???"
