Did you attend the old Pewabic School? If so, on Saturday, August 6, 2005, at the Quincy FireHall, there will be an informal reunion of ALL who attended the school. Right now the goal is to create a guest list of people we can contact about the event. Yesterday a semi-load of pontoon boats was spotted northbound in Keweenaw county - on their way to Bemidji MN. Wonder if they got to their destination?

Mornin'. Do you suppose those were summer or winter pontoons. Bemidji doesn't thaw until May or June.

Ok ,all the signs are there of an early spring.
Last night my husband's new car was "skunked"!
I guess Mr Smelly must not like the color silver!
One of my friends almost hit a skunk a few days ago.
"Who let the skunks out", Who, Who......

Skunks already? Isn't kind of early? Gee, with all this snow on the ground yet, I thought they would still hibernate or what ever they do in the winter.

Yea, What is it with the skunks this year? They have been out here for about 3 weeks. Really thought they would hibernate for another month at least.

The sun has got real power in it now. Even when the
temp is actually below freezing these days there is
considerable melting back from the warm sun.

While non Michiganers are gagging at the skunk aroma, we are grinning, "wow, spring is finally here."

Lee, I bet that will be an interesting insurance claim for getting your hubby's car 'unskunked'.

One of my fears was having my car skunked. I remember many a spring night driving down dark country roads only to suddenly have my car fill up with skunk aroma....and think that I had hit a skunk and been skunked.

Funny skunk story. I was working one night, and the guy I was working with radioed me...he was talking really softly, "Be very quiet...I have a skunk following me."

Oh c'mon, now who of you could resist? I keyed in my radio and at the top of my lungs I screamed, "here kitty kitty! Come here kitty kitty." All of a sudden, the guy that I was working with comes tearing around the side of the building...as fast as he could run...with this skunk chasing after him...and the radio blaring, "here kitty kitty!".

Meanwhile, I was in the building watching out the window and laughing at him run laps around the building with the skunk in fast pursuit.

Skunks that answer to "here Kitty, Kitty, must be half cat, ha, ha. Whew, what a skunk story!
Bet that skunk thought he had a catch!

Just knew if I hung onto that long enough it'd be useful.

Small world! Yesterday, in the middle of Georgia, I was heading home from Augusta. The car in front of me had a Michigan Tech University decal on the rear window. I couldn't catch up with her to see who she was--she passed my house and kept going. Signs of home are welcome here. I plan to get there for the CHS reunion in July.

Personally, I love the cultural exchange. I think the editors have done an excellent job of representing all heritages that originally populated the Keweenaw. I hope this will continue, and all opinions be respected.

The native language of a lot of yoopers is Finnish, and I believe that since this is a 'Yooper' site, that JAPEI's posts in their native tongue are more than appropriate here. It's their heritage and I am glad that they are proud of it. ;)

No objection to posting in Finnish, but we'd really appreciate it if you'd include a translation for those of us who can't speak it.

To jAPEi, kiitos for the Finn. My grandma spoke Finn in our home when we were growing up on Tamarack Street in Laurium. we didn't learn much and retained very little after all these years. I have to say I miss hearing it but I haven't a clue for the most part what you are writing but keep it up. Some people do out there. I'll bet it has something to do with the photo of the day. Maybe about skiing perhaps. In any case I try to teach myself new Finn words to use on my sisters and friends from time to time by going to the English to Finnish dictionaries on-lne. Yesterday I learned to say sorry/excuse me "anteeksi"...I think I spelled that correctly. Charlie, do any of the folks at Still Waters speak Finnish?
It's nice to see the diversity here on this site.

Trust me, you do not have to learn Finnish to visit this site. Nor do you have to complain about postings in Finnish. They do serve as an enjoyable "exercise for the reader" for those of us who do share the Finnish heritage. It comes with the neighborhood!
With any luck a translation will be forthcoming.

Please don't be so easily insulted. This site is meant for all to enjoy. Especially those with roots that go down deep. I'm not quite sure why you saw the need for the Finnish writer to change languages. That confuses me since you could just smile at it and scroll down, knowing someone would get a big kick out of it and get all nostalgic for old family or friends who may have shared the language and culture with them. If you are from the UP you must have some of the culture in your bones if not the spoken/written word. So, they got touchy because you got touchy...so as my dad used to say "knock it off, all of you" or mom would say "stop your bickering"...only she said it in Finn and I don't know how to spell it. This is a great site to visit and support...keep on coming and enjoying. Everybody's contributions make it what it is...SPECIAL!!! Really SPECIAL!!!

I'm a Frenchy from the CC, and believe me, there are as many French folks as Finns...especially around Lake Linden, Hubbell, Chassell, and a few other places....but doesn't written Finnish have a cool look about it ???

Anyway, if using Finnish bothers someone on this site, you have
to wonder how much knowledge they have about the people
who settled in the U.P. -- and who still live there. I was
thinking about the Finnish heritage of the Copper Country the
other day when reading an article in The New Yorker about
Osmo Vanska and the Minnesota Orchestra. What a rave review!
Then that same night I heard a fellow on NPR talk about how
the two main music magazines in Britain foe classical music
were raving about Osmo Vanska and the Minnesota Orchestra
for the new CDs they are putting out on the Beethoven
symphonies. How proud, I thought, the people at Suomi
College must be about Vanska and his orchestra!

Thanks jAPEi for the message in Finnish. I don't see how it can offend anyone, since only one of the messages out of 34 is in Finnish. I enjoy this site. It is a great site for anyone with connections to the UP.

I think the Finnish Language is kinda interesting on this site. Maybe we could get someone to post some other language on this site, such as French, Italian, Polish, German,etc. I enjoy the French Canadian, and find it very interesting. If I dont like a subject I skip right by it. Maybe there are people out there who dont understand the English language that would like to take part on this site. Take part and enjoy.

Dave S, I agree with you, the Finnish written language does look neat...I love it and think it adds a nice cultural touch to the site. :)

About skunks, I once spotted a skunk in a garbage dump like we had years ago. It had it's head stuck in a can and couldnt get it off. I dont know what happened to the critter but I didn't stick around to find out.

Yea, skunks, I wonder how they developed such a foul smell to them anyway? Wow, nothing worse than that getting on you or a pet for that matter.

To everyone. Let me first say that I am not very knowledgeable in translating from Finnish to English. A lot of words get lost in the translation. He also seems to have a rhyme to his statement, and I have interpreted as thus:

'Hello...is good skier while daytime is liquid and fair weather, while the mood is aloft and the snow glints radiant on a good day. Same here and butcher across (or cut across) prefer extremely here too hour after hour. Michigan news already here. Furthermore same eqos here.'

On the other hand, I may not know what I'm talking about. (But it sounds good. :)

Sur5er, thanks for the good wishes re: my upcoming surgery at Mayo - tricky stuff (heart and esophagus all messed up along with an aneurysm) but I have an amazing gift of peace from my heavenly Father - He doesn't make mistakes regardless of the outcome! :) Blessings!

To: J A P E I, keep up your posting, those of us who cannot read your post always wait for someone to eventually translate it for us. I admire you, not only do you use your native language, but you also do a pretty good job with the English language. How many of us can say that.
