Good Morning

Good morning everyone!

Good morning! Just returned from a wonderful weekend in Copper Country. We had never been to the U.P. before during the winter months. It was beautiful! We spent Friday touring the Michigan Tech campus and talking with the faculty and advisors and taking in all of the festivities of Winter Carnival. Our son is considering Michigan Tech. On Saturday we took an early morning drive along Huron Bay. Then breakfast at Hilltop. Of course we had to have a sweetroll. Delicious! Then we took a drive up to Copper Harbor making many stops along the way. We stopped at Einerlei in Chassel. Then on to Laurium to see Laurium Manor Inn. Next we stopped at Copper World in Calumet. I purchased a Stormy Kromer hat there. My wife and kids say I look like Elmer Fudd with the hat on but I don't care, I am wearing it anyhow! On to Eagle River and Eagle River Inn. Seen many deer in the park. Next stop was the Eagle Harbor lighthouse. Then on to Copper Harbor. Had lunch in a nice little place on the corner by the light. Then it was back to Houghton. We stopped and did a little shopping in Houghton visiting Haug's Jewelry. After the long day we returned to L'Anse and had dinner at the Hilltop. It was very interesting visiting many of the places I had seen on this web site. If I hadn't seen them here I probably wouldn't have stopped.

I hope ;your son picks MTU too. This is my son's first year. Except for a little homesickness now and then he loves it. He came to realize that everyone there was there for a reason. TO get a good education and beat the person next to them out of a job. MTU does a great job keeping parents informed and helping everyone cope with the distance. My son is looking forward to many years here. Did you notice when you did your tour, none of the students ever want to leave. SO far our experience in the UP has been better than we had hoped for. Good Luck to you and your son in the months to come.

Just wondering if the bridge cam images are archived at all. I used to have a picture for my desktop from 2003 on my old computer. But it got lost while moving things over to the new one. Thanks in advance.

I have been to the U.P. many times in the summer and fall months. My brother has a hunting camp near Watton on M-28. Was there bear hunting this past October. I have been fishing in the Huron Bay. It's such a beautiful place! Would love to live there some day but have two kids to get through college first. We were all very impressed with MTU. My daughter is in her third year at a college in Ohio. I am not really as impressed with that college as I am with MTU. I am glad MTU helps parents cope with the distance. It is about a 11 hour drive for us! Drive 11 hours and never leave the state!

I thought that the tradition of "panking" went back to Finland where the snow was panked up against the sides of the house for insulation purposes. The old joke was that the walls never got below 32°

Just maybe if the Green Bay Packers would move to the UP. We could call them the UP Pankers. Nuf said, Har de Har, Just a thought.

Being just a third-generation Yooper Finn, maybe I missed something … I never quite understood whatever subtle difference there may be between "pank" and the perfectly good English word "tamp", but "pank" it always was, fer shure!

I had a hunch that perhaps "pank" (verb) was in some way related to "snow bank", perhaps from Finnglish: "pank" (noun), which of course was where you put your raha! J

I do not know the address but I will get brave again I will post the New? picture 1985. My mom also showed me the home where she went to kindergarden. It was up on a large hill and railroad tracks were in front of the house. She said the Gagnons lived near there too?? Thanks for all the help.. I love trying to find out our history, Ellen
