Here in the U.P. it's sometimes hard to get to the store for supplies, due to the inclement weather we are subject to receive. This could be the case for these ingenious youngsters, wanting to wish Grandpa a happy 70th birthday. Peg Hardt reports that the temperature the day the kids did their fancy footwork, was a -20°. Just proving that kids will still be kids, when it comes to getting outside and playing in the snow, it doesn't matter what degree the thermometer says it is. I think the secret is to keep moving, which these two most certainly did stomping out their note. If you just happen to have a birthday today, consider this a message for you, too! :->

What a great picture - heart warming in the -20 temps!

And what fancy footwork by the kids! How many others would have kept the letters so evenly sized & spaced? Very impressive!

I'd MUCH rather receive something from the efforts of two children who did something so sweet (and then having the privilege of photographing it),than getting a paper card from the Hallmark store any day! This picture will be family 'lore' for generations to come. Adorable!

The grandkids had a little help in keeping the letters even. They were led by our daughter. :o) You can see the creation in progress on my album page.

Wow, look at the Ramada Inn parking lot. I bet there isn't a room left for me. Have a good weekend.....I'll have to watch from a far. They should have a snowmobile show/parade for us out here watching them by way of PastyCam. That would be fun, wouldn't it?

By Les Moore Washington on Friday, February 18, 2005 - 11:34 pm:

Looks like they live on a lake? The message in on ice.

By Peg in Green Bay on Saturday, February 19, 2005 - 09:17 am:

The photo was taken on a small lake a couple of miles from Ironwood/Wakefield/Blackjack. And the message is no longer on ice. We were up last week and new snow and animal tracks had covered it. :o/

What a tremendous effort - very creative - great photo. That Grandpa Jon is one lucky guy to have grandkids work that hard for him.

By Molly in Oregon on Wednesday, February 23, 2005 - 11:57 pm:

Happy Birthday to Grandpa John whoever you are, many more. We write it in the sand here on the beach. Not as cold, the waves wash it away, no snow here at the beach. Great job kids. Love your Grandpa, he will be gone one day.

By Peg in Green Bay on Thursday, February 24, 2005 - 09:31 am:

Molly in Oregon,
Thanks for your greeting! Grandpa Jon's Dad lives in Salem and we visited a few years ago and took these two grandkids to the ocean. Great Grandpa wrote their names in the sand. I wish I knew how to upload pics to this site. It was a wonderful photo!

I guess Grandpa's family has always been writing messages in snow/sand. This photo was taken 5 years ago on the Oregon coast. Great Grandpa Hardt is writing Ginger and Tyler in the sand. Same grandkids that composed the BD message on ice.

By Greg and Rochelle Wanner, Wisconsin on Saturday, March 5, 2005 - 10:30 am:

Found it! Look at that impeccable lettering! Nature is winter's palette, but snow on a frozen lake is Tyler and Ginger's. (Okay, so that doesn't make a lot of sense as far as analogies go, but its sounds profound, and you know what we mean.)

Belated birthday wishes to "Grandfather Jon"!
