You can probably guess all of the explaining that is done down here when these local kids try to pronounce he island name or worse--Pere Marquette. They just don't grow yoopers down here.

YOOPER GHOST STORY

This happened about a month ago just outside of Toivola, a little town in
Michigans upper peninsula, and while it sounds like an Alfred Hitchcock
tale, it's real.

This out of state traveler was on the side of the road, hitchhiking on a
real dark night in the middle of a thunderstorm.
Time passed slowly and no cars went by.
It was raining so hard he could hardly see his hand in front of his face.
Suddenly he saw a car moving slowly, approaching and appearing ghostlike
in the rain. It slowly and silently crept toward him and stopped.

Wanting a ride real bad the guy jumped in the car and closed the door;
only then did he realize that there was nobody behind the wheel, and no
sound of an engine to be heard over the rain.
Again the car crept slowly forward and the guy was terrified, too scared to
think of jumping out and running. The guy saw that the car was approaching a sharp
curve and, still too scared to jump out, he started to pray and begging
for his life; he was sure the ghost car would go off the road and in the
swamp and he would surely drown! But just before the curve a shadowy
figure appeared at the driver's window and a hand reached in and turned
the steering wheel, guiding the car safely around the bend. Then, just as
silently, the hand disappeared through the window and the hitchhiker was
alone again!
Paralyzed with fear, the guy watched the hand reappear every time they
reached a curve. Finally the guy, scared to near death, had all he could
take and jumped out of the car and ran to town.
Wet and in shock, he went into a bar and voice quavering, ordered two
shots of whiskey, then told everybody about his supernatural experience.
A silence enveloped and everybody got goose bumps when they realized the
guy was telling the truth (and not just some drunk).
About half an hour later two guys walked into the bar and one says to the
other, "Look Toivo, ders dat idiot dat rode in our car when we wuz pushin
it in da rain."

Oh that's way too funny!

Loved the Toivola story.But back to The Lake and ice... In the 30's and early 40's Green Bay seemed to have a lot of ice. On the shores at Menominee there were ice boats and races and many ice-fishing shacks. It wasn't unusual for cars to drive out on the ice. Not so the last half of the century, although a few years ago I did see a sno-mobile race track off the shores of Marinette. Also, one year, probably in the 30's there was a huge "ice-shove" at Henes Park outside of Menominee. The winds had blown the broken ice in OVER the streetlights along the road by the playground. Somewhere my family had photos of that. I've never seen anything like that from Superior--has anyone else?

How about "Wall of Silver", the new book regarding the secret silver mine at the Cliff?

One prominent Calumet merchant predicts at least one thousand guys with new metal detectors out there, come spring. It is a fun read.

I couldn't find an actual website for the Our Lady of The Pines. But I was able to find other Copper Harbor websites with some information about the church. Hope this helps.

Sorry, I have to disagree. There are no "Geese" in kissa!

One of the singular features of Finnish is that every letter in a word is pronounced, and for doubled consonants, that means both of them, with a syllable break between 'em — one in each syllable.

The initial single 'k" is a "soft" 'k', to an unpracticed ear it will indeed sound like a 'g'.
The 'i' is pronounced approximately like the 'i' in "hit, kit, bit".
The 'a' is prounounced like the 'a' in "arm".

Thus 'kissa' = "kis'-sa" which may sound like "gis'-sa", in either case the accent is on the first syllable.

Here in San Jose it is about 55º, pouring rain off and on, the trees are flowering, the tulip trees in full bloom and the daffodils are all blooming along the parkway. Looks like spring is coming early.

Troll in Eagle Harbor: Trust me, if you look hard enough on the most southern shores of Lake Michigan, you will find...you may have to squint really hard, but it's there.

Look just west of Michigan City, IN on your map (sometimes it's even on Michigan maps)...in the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore.

Yep, from those days on grandpa's UP dairy farm... "vasikka" = calf, "lehmä" = cow.
