Morning, 0 degrees here in Lapeer.

By Margaret, Amarillo TX on Thursday, January 27, 2005 - 07:13 am:

I remember this from my early childhood--born in Ashland. My granddad and daddy worked the ore docks in this icy part of the world. We have pictures of huge Walleye being caught from the ice covered Chequamenon Bay. I do miss those times.

Sunny and cold in Commerce today--lovely.

By sur5er, Indiana on Thursday, January 27, 2005 - 08:38 am:

Good morning everyone :) It's a beautiful sunny day, with wonderful crisp temps at 1 degrees, the weather man says that with the windshield factor, it will be below zero all day today. Yeeeeeeee haaaaaaaaaaaaaaw! Aaaaaaaaaah...I love the cold...and the colder the better.

Hubby left for the road this morning, and we stood outside and watched the sun rising over the the eastern horizon, and the full moon high in the western sky. What a beautiful sight, on such a clear day.

By What was that? on Thursday, January 27, 2005 - 08:40 am:

Windshield factor??

By Weather gal on Thursday, January 27, 2005 - 09:27 am:

You know, where the wind slams against the windshield of the car! Makes it very cold.

By tight lines on Thursday, January 27, 2005 - 09:40 am:

off the subect, but what kind of fish do people catch in the
Portage Canal? or is the water polluted from marine vessel
oil?

By Taana on Thursday, January 27, 2005 - 09:54 am:

You can catch almost anything. For the past couple of years we've had the PWT (Professional Walleye Tournment) up here and they caught some impressive fish.

By sur5er, Indiana on Thursday, January 27, 2005 - 11:34 am:

Weather Gal: ROFL...works for me if it works for you. :)

By DH, Temecula, CA on Thursday, January 27, 2005 - 11:45 am:

Tight lines,

Walleye, Northern Pike, Muskie, Large Mouth, Small Mouth, Crappie, Perch, Sturgeon, Bullhead, Rock Bass, probably others.

I can't say that all of these are in the canal itself, but they've been caught in the canal, Portage Lake and Pike Bay.

As Taana said, the area is gaining a reputation for its great Walleye fishery and there isn't enough boat traffic to cause any pollution problems.

Dave.

Tight lines-
Regarding fish in Portage lake-
I`ve caught myself or seen caught Walleye, northern pike, perch, crappie, rockbass, smallmouth bass, bluegill, suckers, brown trout,
sturgeon, bullheads. I`m told the occasional muskie and tiger muskie is taken but I`ve never seen one taken myself. If you venture out to the entrys you can throw the odd lake trout and coho in as well although they are mostly caught out in the big lake. Some of the creeks that drain into portage have brook trout. The water is quite clean ( in my opinion ) but there are some lingering effects from the copper processing days, particularly in torch lake, which connects with portage. The DNR has some advisories regarding eating fish from these waters but I know of many who have eaten fish from here their whole life w/o any ill affects, myself included.

I`m unaware of any largemouth bass in portage although I could be wrong.Have you seen or caught them yourself?

Are there Sauger in the Portage canal.

By Amber, Lake County on Thursday, January 27, 2005 - 04:04 pm:

Who cares what the name of the fish are? Fish are fish, they all taste the same, and smell up the kitchen when cooking them.

You should not insult Burbot like that.

By In Jest on Thursday, January 27, 2005 - 06:26 pm:

Burbot can be quite acceptable eating if cooked properly.
Lawyers should be left at the bottom of the lake.

By copper country resident on Thursday, January 27, 2005 - 08:54 pm:

I wouldn't eat anything out of Portage Canal.
The old Portage View Hospital sewage used to run
into the canal many, many, many years ago.
Or was it the St Joseph Hospital as it was called
before.

By Torch lake brown trout on Thursday, January 27, 2005 - 09:05 pm:

Yup..all towns dumped sewage into Superior or the canal at one time yum..

By DH, Temecula, CA on Thursday, January 27, 2005 - 09:54 pm:

Hi Butchieboy,

I caught what I'm almost sure was a largemouth in 2000. I'm normally a 'catch and release' guy, but put this one on a stringer tied to the boat so I could check it out before letting it go. The coloration on the body and hinge point of the jaw with relation to the eye were what led me to conclude it was a largemouth. This was the first I'd seen in 30 years of fishing on the lake.

Dave.

ps: A friend of mine caught a Sauger out of the Sturgeon River when we were kids. Had no idea what that one was, either. Showed it to a few neighbors, one of whom dug out a fish book of some sort where we found a pic.
