Good morning from cold and snowy Mishawaka IN.
First Post

By finngal fl on Saturday, January 22, 2005 - 08:14 am:

Good morning! 62 degrees here in Pensacola FL.

By Mary, NWOh on Saturday, January 22, 2005 - 08:55 am:

We're still working on 6-8" here in NW Ohio, not sure about the temperature. Just glad its a Saturday. I can sit inside and watch, and when it stops we'll go out and clear it away. Of course the wind is supposed to pick up this afternoon so we may be clearing it over and over again but... its supposed to be almost 40° on Wednesday so it'll go away all by itself again. I'm making a big pot of chili and then going down to play in my sewing room. Enjoy the day, everyone.

By Missin the UP from NJ on Saturday, January 22, 2005 - 09:18 am:

Good morning!
It's around zero here and we're supposed to be getting that snow that has been falling across the upper Midwest. Now they say we're gonna get more snow cause of a Nor'easter coming up the coast! It'll meet that western storm and drop up to 26"! Now, that's more like my memories of living in the UP. Will be too cold and WINDY to snowshoe tomorrow, but I get to go out next week after everyone goes back to work- Yay!!
Stay safe and warm everone!

By sur5er, Indiana on Saturday, January 22, 2005 - 09:36 am:

Good morning everyone :) It looks like we have another foot of snow out there today. It's so beautiful :)

Still waiting to hear something from my hubby...haven't heard from him since last night. Anyone know how the Ohio and Indiana tollways are?

'Missin The UP from NJ', I guess my hubby got out of NJ with that load just in time, eh.

By sandstone princess on Saturday, January 22, 2005 - 09:52 am:

Well, all that snow that points east will or may be getting now IS falling NOW in Iowa! Can't see across the road. VERY windy. Zero degrees.
Had rain and sleet last evening. All makes for very poor driving and getting around.
Hi to the cousin in IN, dah sistahs and friends in WA and points out west.

By Margaret, Amarillo TX on Saturday, January 22, 2005 - 10:01 am:

The thermometer says 32° but the windchill is 22°, but the sun is out.

By Greta, Milwaukee on Saturday, January 22, 2005 - 12:47 pm:

Blowin' up a storm here in Milwaukee - that wonderful east wind right off the big lake. Snowing slow and steady but drifting is the problem as the winds are pretty high and mighty. Makes me feel like I'm in the UP.

By Dave, Laurium on Saturday, January 22, 2005 - 01:18 pm:

Just another day of that good ol' Copper Country sunshine on 5th Street... don't get out the sunscreen and bug spray yet....
5th Street

Great picture Dave!

By sur5er, Indiana on Saturday, January 22, 2005 - 02:10 pm:

Just received a phone call from hubby. He arrived at work safe and sound and will be home in a bit. The Indiana toll way is a bear with the blowing snow...hubby said the average speed was about 45. Anyone traveling that way this afternoon/evening, beware of the next part of the snow storm. Hubby said they are predicting ANOTHER 8-10 inches of lake effect snow in northern Indiana.

Hope everyone has a wonderful and safe weekend. :)

By Dale Calumet on Saturday, January 22, 2005 - 02:23 pm:

Glad that husband is back!!

By NKR Mishawaka IN on Saturday, January 22, 2005 - 03:25 pm:

Thanks Dave,Laurium for a great picture. Is that a little bit of sun trying to come thru the snow?

By Missin the UP from NJ on Saturday, January 22, 2005 - 03:29 pm:

sur5er! so glad to hear your hubby is home safe!
:) **Just decided to send out a thanks to all you truckers who bring the goods to all the rest of us through storms or whatever comes along out on those roadways! (I sure would miss my Fresh veggies in the wintertime!) OH MY- and the families who stay home and worry!!
THANK YOU! God's Bless!

By Bthecute1, San Jose on Saturday, January 22, 2005 - 04:55 pm:

Thanks Dave for the great picture. I don't know how you all survive those cold winters, or even want to. It is supposed to go up to 55 here in San Jose, if the fog ever lifts, or maybe that is haze I am looking at. :)

By sur5er, Indiana on Saturday, January 22, 2005 - 05:34 pm:

Dale and Missin the UP from NJ: Aaaaaaaaah, thanks for your well wishes. After hubby drove all those hundreds of miles through the snow, where did he get his semi stuck at? Need you ask? Of course...in the driveway. Yeah, yeah, I did the Michigan plow job in the driveway with my truck (called forward and reverse)...and it would have worked, had the wind not been blowing the snow all over the place.

Missin, hubby loved your message. I think a lot of times the work of truck drivers is unappreciated. Glad to hear that some folks do get it.

I saw the best bumper sticker on the back of a semi the other day, that really sums it up: "If you've got it, a truck brought it."

What part of NJ are your from? Hubby delivers to Tetterboro NJ.

By Jim B.-Fox Point, WI on Saturday, January 22, 2005 - 05:54 pm:

Ah... Finally Fox Point reminds me of the good ole Copper Country in the winter!!! Our first real big-time snowstorm of the winter season.

Its pasty night at our home tonight. Pasties, with a few beverages,in front of a roaring fireplace! Life is good!!! All I need now is a sauna.

By maijaMI on Saturday, January 22, 2005 - 06:17 pm:

Sur5er: Happy reunion with hubby, and thank him for his essential work.

Great picture Dave!

By Candy, CA on Saturday, January 22, 2005 - 06:34 pm:

Thanks for the great shot looking up 5th Street, Dave! I think we should start subsidizing all your hard work for those of us who have moved away!

By AimeeR, Hoton on Saturday, January 22, 2005 - 07:35 pm:

Hey, that's me on the flashback! Surprise!

By Missin the UP from NJ on Saturday, January 22, 2005 - 08:11 pm:

Hi sur5er- I'm from the northern part of the state, a town called Ringwood. Very woodsy here, but hundreds of houses built in 'tween the trees!
I am familiar with Teterboro, tho. He's a brave trucker to drive into this state. We got more than our share of cell phone talkin', fast food eatin', coffee drinkin' drivers! No kidding, I visualize a white protective light around my car every time I go out! ;)
Best to both of you!
Oh and I sure have enjoyed your posts! You make me laugh with your descriptive stories!

By lala on Saturday, January 22, 2005 - 09:07 pm:

Well, My trusty Silver Bear Scoop did wonders for the 8 inches of snow I got today here downstate. I brought it with me 13 years ago when I moved from the Keweenaw.

A question though, saw these on ebay.
plasticthingy

Does anyone have, or ever used one ?
I've never seen it before.

The text in the ad reads;

"Introduced to the public in 1990, the patented Snowmaster Snowscoop™, has been described as "The best snow removal invention in years!" The Snowscoop™ wheels away snow faster and easier than any snow shovel. This product was entirely designed and manufactured in the United States.
The Snowscoop™ is 56" long and 24" wide and has a 4" diameter wheel on the back that allows it to roll smoothly over any surface, easily carrying large amounts of snow to the side. The patented wheel is rated to carry up to 250 lbs. and is non-marking.
How it works:
The weight of the snow is supported by the wheel and not your back. A steel edge on the front lip will completely clean a smooth surface.
Tested extensively in the U.S. and Canada, the Snowscoop™ has been shown, time and time again, to be an easy and effective method for clearing snow from driveways, walkways, patios, and decks.
Moves snow 3 to 5 times faster than a shovel
Clears a 28" path each time you push it into wet and heavy snow" etc.

thoughts?

By sur5er, Indiana on Saturday, January 22, 2005 - 09:38 pm:

Missin The UP: You mean they actually have trees and woods in NJ? And all this time, when I have driven through NJ, I thought the billboard was the state tree :)

Yep, I tell my husband the same thing, that his job has got to be one of the most dangerous jobs. I don't know how he does it...and will be so glad when he retires.

Glad you like my posts...can you tell that I was the problem child of the department?

By Bobt, Michigan on Saturday, January 22, 2005 - 10:30 pm:

Holy cow! MTU beats #3 Minnesota again tonight by a 3 to 1 score, the first sweep at Minnesota since 1971. They won on Friday by a 6-3 score. Way to go Huskies. It's been a long wait for a 4-1 record in the last 5 games! For fans in the Fox Sports Detroit network, the game will be shown at 2 AM tonight! It was live on FSNMN and two satelite networks tonight.

By Susan, Fl on Saturday, January 22, 2005 - 11:55 pm:

Sur5er....thought about your hubby several times throughout the day....was going to check in with you when I got to work tonight, but see several of our wonderful "yooper checker inners" had beat me to the punch. Glad he's home safe and sound. Tell him we don't need any more gray hairs....Cairol's price keeps going up! ;)

By sur5er, Indiana on Sunday, January 23, 2005 - 01:23 am:

Susan from Florida, Thank you :)

I used my nervous energy to sew...and I sewed up a storm...two pairs of pajama bottoms and long night shirt (flannel of course). By the end of the winter, I should have a complete wardrobe ;)

Have a good one a work...and stay out of trouble. :)

By Susan, Fl on Sunday, January 23, 2005 - 05:41 am:

Sur5er.....use my excess energy (what there is of it) on cross stitch...am working on an afghan right now...on Anne cloth.....will take me forever! Sort of my own design....or at least a conglomeration of others...49 squares with snowflakes, pinecones, holly and poinsettias and edged in holly with bows. Frankly, your sewing makes a lot more sense! That flannel stuff is loverly in winter....sometimes even in summer....but not in Florida! Well, back to work, high ho, high ho!

By sur5er, Indiana on Sunday, January 23, 2005 - 10:01 am:

Susan....your cross stitch project sounds beautiful. I love taking ideas from different projects and then combining them to creat something different and unique. Wow, just think, in a few years, when we're up in the UP, we'll be able to stay busy in the winter with our crafts. Just call us the Clariol Craft Ladies ;)

By Missin the UP from NJ on Sunday, January 23, 2005 - 10:16 am:

Sur5er-
To answer your question about the trees in NJ! Yes, shocking as it may be to the rest of the country- NJ actually has a lot of forest! IN FACT New Jersey is the Garden State, which comes from the many farms that were in this state for centuries. Now there are many McMansions growing where vegetables used to grow. The state has actually set aside thousands of acres right here in the area I live in, to save a vital watershed and recreation area. IF you can avoid the shopping areas and highway areas like Rte's 46,17, 3, and 23, the NJ TPK, etc, you would be amazed at the beautiful areas there are here. The NJ shore area has rightful bragging rights for beauty also, but I only go down that way off season- way toooo many people in summer. But no matter how many beautiful areas I drive through in NJ, I find my heart is in the UP. NOTHING comes close to feeling I get whenever I cross over into the Upper Penninsula!

By sur5er, Indiana on Sunday, January 23, 2005 - 10:28 pm:

Missin The UP, Wow, I never would have guessed that NJ had all those forests. I've gone out that way with hubby, and I always chuckled at the sign "welcome to the garden state", as we sat in miles of traffic. Isn't that something how we get an imagine of a place, based on only seeing a section of it?

Hear you about the feeling when you cross the Mighty Mac and hit God's Country. Yaaaaaaaaahoooooo!
