Good morning from Mishawaka IN. Boy you guys sure are getting your share of snow up there. Has it let up any? Does everyone still have electricity? Its just cold down here and we got a little snow overnight. We might be getting some lake effect snow today. Stay warm and safe everyone.

For those of you looking for something fun to do tonight, there's a Northwoods Wilderness Recovery Benefit Concert (Sunday) from 6:00pm to midnight at the Marquette Ramada Inn--- featuring some excellent pickers: Steppin'In It, Seth Bernard,
and Ignorant Mob. (Donations cheerfully accepted :) at the door). Meanwhile, I'm headed out to the ice shanty this chilly morning in search of toothy predators. Have a great day...

Morning everyone. Temps here in Indiana are still nice and cold with snow on the way. Now this is what I call winter :)

NKR in Mishawaka, I looked out my window facing towards Lake Michigan, and yepper depper from the looks of those clouds in the north, it is definately lake effect snow that we will be getting over the next two days.

Hope all of you in Keweenaw are surviving the snow :)

Maija- Sorry I don't check the postings religously.
The group of individuals composing the Eagle Alliance (a group opposed to sulfide mining in the UP) claim to be professionals, yet their professions/occupations have nothing to do with the mineral industry. From all I have seen and heard, the group leaders seem to be self-educated on the topic and it appears as though they picked poor sources from which to educate themselves. All arguments I have heard from this group are outdated or completely fabricated claims. Their views of the mining industry in general are skewed and warped, and their tactics are unethical. I would like to make it clear that I am not opposed to activism- it definitely has a purpose and place, however, the use of scare tactics and spread of misinformation employed by the Eagle Alliance is simply unacceptable. As a result of this I refuse to patronize any group or business that supports them (even if that support is just displaying flyers).

Completely understand your view on those who oppose mining.

I work with crime victims fighting for their rights and crime victim programs,(and did long before I was victimized by a crime). The toughest opponents that I have to deal with in getting programs iniated are people who have never been victimized by crime...and wouldn't dare roll up their sleeves and work one on one with victims. Yet these are the people I have to deal with and go through. Go figure.

Makes you wonder why people who are unaffected by something, get a fire going under thier butts, and make it their life ambition to oppose something tooth and nail, eh. Don't they have anything better to do with their time?

You are right- we do need people to be concerned about the environment, however it should be done in an ethical matter, by knowledgeable people. Furthermore, supporting any of these groups in anyway is encouraging their unethical behaviors.

Thanks for the encouragement, its good to hear that others feel the same way. It really makes you wonder how people can spend the time required to "make it their life ambition to oppose something tooth and nail" and can still find the time to maintain their jobs/home life.

Joe Dase: there is no one more concerned about the environment than I am! However, it is a complex situation. I believe educated voices should speak out, and I thank you for yours.

I have done research for years (for crime victim programs)...and you need to back up your research with good hard claims and numbers/stats. When you distort this for a point of view, it is unethical.

For example, opponents of crime victim programs in Indiana claimed that there was no need for any more of these programs because more than 50% of crime victims were recieving assistance. These stats were very wrong...and in fact more than 80% of crime victims were not obtaining assistance. The original stats simply divided the number of state crime victims by the number of crime victim programs across the board...not taking into account that not all areas/counties had programs and the large number of victims were without assistance. This is a scary aspect of stats...when in the wrong hands, they can be distorted.

Since you oppose the group that is opposing the mining, have you considered doing your own research and stats to disprove their claims? Will be more than happy to assist you in any way.

Rumer has it that the new packer boss wants to trade Brett Favre for Randy Moss. Who knows, could be a good trade for the cheeseheads.

First of all, since I don't think I did already, I'd like to wish everyone a Happy New Year! Now that I'm back home, later than expected, and have fulltime access to a/my computer again, I have a lot of catching-up to do the next few days, here and elsewhere (read, Mails).
Already got a good shaking-up when reading about the end of pasty.cam. Waaah!

clf.mi, while I'm at it and rolling, sure seems to me common sense is precisely what Joe was asking for. Worst that can happen to soft causes like environmentalism and social programmes is the eagerness of people with more enthusiasm than knowledge. This is not necessarily a question of education, more of information and, well, common sense in dealing with it.
If some targets an environmental issue with faulty data, they'll be easily defeated, further damaging the stand environmentalism as such has because it gives people reason to (complain) about all those looney 'environazis', 'greenies', 'treehuggers' and what other derogative terms there are.
On a side note: I think everybody using the term "nazi" as a general derogative, combined or single, should visit the Wannsee-Villa in Berlin and Auschwitz in Poland to get an idea about what Nazis really were, and are.
