Yes, wake up, so I can say hello!
Hello,
I discovered this site a week or so ago, and have been shedding tears over the photos of real snow, while I'm here in North Scotland with nothing but rain, wind, and sheep.
However, I won't dwell on homesickness, and I hope this is within your forum guidelines:
I'm a writer, and am doing research into recent UP history, the era around 1950 and a bit earlier. I was hoping some of you might be able to help with a few of the million or so questions I have.

As an example: I have been looking into the 1926 flooding of the Barnes-Hecker mine. According to what I've found, Cleveland Cliffs paid out twice the required amount in compensation to dependents. Do any of you have an idea of approximately how much a family would have received and for how long?
If anyone here who remembers the forties and fifties would be willing to correspond with me off-list, I would really appreciate it. I'm particularly interested in learning what impact, if any, the anti-communist campaigns of the early 1950s might have had on UP communities.
Thanks a bunch, you can go back to sleep now, it's Sunday!

Two recipes for pasty in this morning's "Milwaukee Journal Sentinels" food section. Yeasted Cornish Pasties and U.P. Pasties. In the U.P. dough recipe they call for one tablespoon packed brown sugar. Haven't heard of that before. Has anybody else??

> A: He can't find the receiver.

> A: None of them. There is no such thing as Santa Claus, the Tooth Fairy, or a smart Bear fan...and the dumb Bear fan thought is was a gum wrapper.
