Wah! -28° below this morning with wind chill (which is actually warmer than yesterday!) Quite the unique shot taken by Bill Haller (or Mrs. Bill) through their window at Bete Grise. The frost on the glass frames the scene just perfectly, giving it a sense of looking into another world. Which, of course, here in the U.P. is what it seems like when you walk out into the sub-zero temperatures we get, along with the blowing and drifting snow. Just beyond that little gazeebo you can see the edge of the channel wall which connects the big Lake to Lac La Belle. To get your bearings, the Mendota Lighthouse is further to the right of this scene.
Lot's of stuff goin' on here in the Keweenaw this weekend, in spite of the cold. The VFW pasty sale in Calumet from 10am-2pm, Big Buck Night tonight in Dollar Bay, and Heikinpäivä happenings in Hancock. All I can say is - - bundle up!

Today's pic is just awesome, its cold here in Afghanistan now, we did get some snow the other day but it melted as fast as if hit the ground, but I really love this pic. Take care everyone and Keep the Faith.
Well, it's just another balmy day in the Copper Country. The sunscreen and bug spray is flying off the shelves today. Here's a shot of Bete Gris with Mt Houghton in the background on the nice blue sky winter day earlier in the week....

Definition of "blizzard" from the Audubon Society's "Field Guide to North American Weather" by David M. Ludlum, A.E. Knopf, c1991, pp.143-144: "...winds with speeds of at least 35 miles per hour are accompanied by considerable falling and blowing snow, and temperatures of 20 degrees F or lower...[and] expected to prevail for an extended period of time. 'Severe blizzard' warnings ... expect wind speeds of at least 45 mph along with a great density of falling or blowing snow and temperatures of 10 degrees F or lower." Feel sorry for the college kids racing at Ripley today!!!!
