It looks like the ice under the bridge is melted. Why would that be? It hasn't been that warm.

By kosk in Toronto (Koskintoronto) on Saturday, December 31, 2005 - 10:08 am:

Happy New Year to everyone. We're just back
(last night) from a wonderful Christmas and
post-Christmas vacation with family and
friends in the UP. It was hard to leave, as it
always is, but nice to look up Main Street in
Ishpeming at 6:45 in the morning and know
that that is the view our daughter has every
morning as she goes to work. The stars did
shine bright on the South Shore a couple of
nights and that certainly was spectacular.
My dad, who went with us, said that this was
his best Christmas. He certainly enjoyed
stoking the wood stove and sauna at the
camp and we all got used to the trek out to the
outhouse. Our daughter was so happy to see
her brother, on leave from Fort Lewis.
Memories...

Have a Happy & Healthy New Year to everyone in Pastyland. Pray that our troops in Iraq will be able to come home safely in this year of 2006. To those enjoying New Years Eve, be safe. Don't drink & drive. Call a cab or have a designated driver with you. Hubby & I will probably be snoring by midnight.LOL

Eugenia (Love your name),
When they add salt to clear the ice off the roadway on the bridge, it also runs off and it melts the ice under the bridge. The roads have been slippery up here and they have been "salting", or whatever the chemical compound is, quite a bit the last week or so.

Grateful thanks to all the wonderful photographers who contribute here.

By Marsha, Genesee/Aura (Marsha) on Saturday, December 31, 2005 - 02:36 pm:

What are you all doing tonight to celebrate? I know I should've posed this question earlier. We will probably do the usual: Watch TV, eat snacks, I'll fall asleep about 11:30 & my husband will wake me up at midnight! Church is at 9:00 tomorrow morn and sometime during the day we'll have a New Year's dinner with my daughter and her daughter. Gary left at 10 this morning to buy the fixings and I haven't heard from him since. This dinner is his show, and I'm sure it will include sauerkraut. I'll make hopping john.

Happy Anniversary Cindylee and hubby, Happy New Years and Peace to all

By kosk in Toronto (Koskintoronto) on Saturday, December 31, 2005 - 02:46 pm:

Marsha,

Every year we put out a combination of open
face sandwiches (a la Scandanavia) and
tapas (a la Spain). Our son, Matt, who is
home from the service, has invited many
buddies over to eat, drink and be merry. My
husband and I have invited a former neighbor,
a friend and her 92 year old mother to join us
as well. Like you, I will be attending an early
church service tomorrow morning, so I expect
that after a couple of phone calls to relatives
after midnight, we'll "pack it in." Tomorrow
we'll have a special dinner which we will
share together with our son and our foster
daughter who lives about 45 minutes away.
On the 2nd, my husband returns to work and
on the 3rd, our son returns to Fort Lewis. I'm
lucky--I don't need to go back until the 9th.

Did you make it up to Aura for Christmas?

By Grace M Wetton (Gmw) on Saturday, December 31, 2005 - 03:12 pm:

New Years Eve, just think, it's upon us. We will
be home with our bottle of bubbly at the stroke of midnight along with the cheese ball, crackers and other snacks. Have a safe New Years Eve everyone!!

By Marc Slis (Marc) on Saturday, December 31, 2005 - 03:14 pm:

I have already had New Years Eve, being over in Asia (its already 2:45 am). My crew celebrated by doing a quick shift change and then tooting a bunch of noisemakers, putting on goofy hats before settling in for just another 12 hr shift. I tried calling my wife and kids in the states but the satillite link to my ship stinks. Here's wishing you all a safe and happy new year from Mynamar (Burma).

Honey, if you read this, Happy New Year and I love you!! -Your seismic pirate:)

By kosk in Toronto (Koskintoronto) on Saturday, December 31, 2005 - 03:25 pm:

Marc,

Happy New Year! Hope you can get in touch
with your family soon.

By eugenia r. thompson (Ert) on Saturday, December 31, 2005 - 05:27 pm:

Thanks, dlp -- I wondered if salt on the road had anything to do w/ the thawed ice under the bridge, but I had never seen that happen before so I wasn't sure.

Thanks for the compliment on my name; it's a family name that goes back several generations. When I was a kid, sometimes people would feel sorry for me because I had such an unusual name. I, on the other hand, loved it and can't imagine having a common name.

By Marsha, Genesee/Aura (Marsha) on Saturday, December 31, 2005 - 05:47 pm:

kosk: We don't usually go to Aura in the winter. Maybe in May, definitely June. Then we go once a month until about October. I'm off work until Wednesday, way too long of a vacation! Your New Year's buffet sounds great! Have a good time!

By Marc Slis (Marc) on Saturday, December 31, 2005 - 05:56 pm:

Kosk: Thank you. A Happy New Year to you and yours!!

HAPPY NEW YEAR 2006 FROM jAPEi to everyone!!!
Here in now well snow and nature is very beautiful!

By kosk in Toronto (Koskintoronto) on Saturday, December 31, 2005 - 07:43 pm:

Marsha--

This was our first time staying at the
camp/cottage at Christmas. Likewise our first
Thanksgiving. We've always shut the place up
by Labor Day. Like you, our jaunts to the UP
began in May and we spent 2-3 weeks there
every summer. I like going more often and
seeing the different seasons. We're hoping to
go in March--March Break in Ontario. Because
I'm a teacher, I get the week off before the final
term which ends on June 30th this year.
