Charlie at Pasty Central (Chopper) on Sunday, December 25, 2005 - 06:16 am:

In this throng of Copper Country residents back in the 40's or 50's, you can distinctly make out jolly old Saint Nick, working the crowd at the corner of Fifth and Oak Street in Calumet. I had seen this photo before - perhaps in the MTU Archives - but received a scan of it only yesterday from Roger & Ruth Janke. Their note said 'year unknown', but judging from the clothing styles, it would appear to be in the post WWII era. A fuzzy old photo like this has a spooky time-machine quality to it... as we strain for clues to the 'who, what, when, and where'. Is there a Pasty Cam watcher somewhere who may have actually been in this crowd? It would be interesting to hear from anyone who could shed some light on this unique window in time.

On behalf of all of us here at Pasty Central, we wish you and yours health and happiness during this wonderful season, especially as we celebrate His birthday.

Answer to Pete's question: A little too much "Christmas Spirit" perhaps?

By Paul Oesterle (Paulwebbtroll) on Sunday, December 25, 2005 - 11:21 am:

Pete, I see that same kangaroo! I haven't had any "Christmas Spirit" but I've been taking some drugs for this darn cold! Merry Christmas everyone (the kangaroo too)! Maybe he came from that "down under" picture the other day.

By Brent in UPstate NY (Brent) on Sunday, December 25, 2005 - 11:32 am:

That's not a kangaroo Pete. That's venison on the hoof.
Merry Christmas everyone and a super-happy-fun-time New Year!

By james f. haven (Technoido) on Monday, December 26, 2005 - 07:12 am:

Does anyone know what all the white headgear on I what I think are
women? Is that a snood? Considering the season, dressing warmly
must have been important. Or is it a photographic artifact, like
blooming? Just wondering.

By Bill Denning (Parpagayo) on Monday, December 26, 2005 - 11:53 am:

Jim, I think those are scarves.

By Helen (Heleninhubbel) on Wednesday, December 28, 2005 - 09:35 pm:

Ba Bush Ga's.......remember????

By WishingIWasInDaUP (Sur5er) on Wednesday, December 28, 2005 - 11:17 pm:

Helen, Yes, I remember babushkas /scarves(or however it is spelled). Uh oh...now you're telling our age ;) That was one of the words we picked up from my mother's mother, when we were younger.

By FRNash/PHX, AZ (Frnash) on Thursday, December 29, 2005 - 12:22 pm:

Babushka - (the scarf, not the Russian grandmother):
Da Finns called it a "huivi", plural "huivit" which translates simply as "wrap".
Yes, my grandma used to wear one too!

By Thomas Baird (Thomas) on Sunday, September 13, 2009 - 09:44 am:

It's always fun 2 include Christmas past along with Christmas present. Thanks 4 sharing the photo.

By Dave Van Dyk (Daveincolumbus) on Monday, December 26, 2022 - 01:46 am:

I want to join all the others over the years who
have said "Thank you!!" for the PastyCam and our
daily look at the U.P. and the Keweenaw. It means
the world to me down here in Columbus, Ohio--where
today we have snow drifts that remind me of home!
Thank you and Merry Christmas to everyone!
