As you may know, Pasty Central has purchased the Hut Restaurant in Kearsarge, where Pasty.NET will have a larger, more powerful network center, and where also a bigger, more efficient pasty production kitchen is in the works. So natuarally our thinking is tuned-in to "Kearsarge" these days. Last night we were browsing through Nancy Sanderson's new historical collection of postcards, and came upon this generic view of US-41. Nothing unusual... except the spelling of 'Houghton'.

Every now and then we will hear some radio announcer out of the area pronounce it "How' ton", but I can't recall anyone saying it "Haw' ton". The guys in East Lansing yesterday had no trouble pronouncing "Houghton Gremlins", as the Girl's Basketball team captured the State Class-C Championship in an exciting game heard on Pasty.NET and WMPL. Our congratulations to the Houghton High ladies for capping off such a remarkable season.

I notice on page 108 of Copper Country Postcards Nancy included a couple of the previous High School buildings in Houghton, with some fascinating notes about construction, destruction, and re-construction over the years. If you haven't already ordered your copy of this new publication from the Keweenaw Historical Society, be sure to include one in your Christmas pasty order, which will save you shipping and handling. Then you can explore the postcard history of the Copper Country while enjoying a genuine taste of the U.P. from Pasty Central!

Good Morning Everyone! Boy, those snowbanks are sure high. I remember going to Grandmas house with the folks on Saturday night to visit in Painesdale. Snow banks were that high getting to the house which was down in a little valley off the highway. Almost like a tunnel.

I can remember my mom and dad shoveling us out of our one story house and the snow coming up to their shoulders. Brrrr.

I love the old pics of the CC.
Maija, wasn't it you that shared with us, several months ago, letters or a journal from a relative, who had spelled Houghton differently?

By Azfinn (Azfinn) on Sunday, December 4, 2005 - 10:01 am:

Yes, I remember the high snow banks and what fun it was as a kid in Houghton. I even recall one particular snowy & windy blizzard when someone had to shovel us out when the snow was so packed against our entire front door that we couldn't open it. Also, I remember shoveling the sidewalk and an hour later it was all drifted in again. But it also meant a snow day, i.e. no school! There's a funny movie called "Snow Day" with Chevy Chase--it brings back memories when the kids wake up and listen by the radio to see if their school will be closed. Ah yes, those were the days, listing by WHDF or WMPL to see if we got to play outside all day!

Romantic picture! Very much snow.. .

By Nancy (Nsanderson) on Sunday, December 4, 2005 - 11:12 am:

I remember how my sisters and I would love to make tunnels into the big snowbanks. It's a wonder no one ever died when they would collapse. It was great growing up with all of the snow; who needed things to climb when a snow bank freshly cut by a snow go made a great climbing wall. Who ever said we were not creative?

Speaking of snow were did the bridge go, at 1200 you can just see a shadow of it through the snow.

Sur5er: I had mentioned an alternate spelling of Houghton. In my mother's diary from 1942 she spelled it Hoton. Others mentioned that Hoton was a frequent shortened form.

Thanks Maija :) Dang, I still have my memory, eh.

When my hubby was a little boy he built a tunnel or fort in the snow & he was inside it when along came the snow go. He had a very close call! He's lucky to be here right now. His Mom has told me the story many times. When we were kids, we certainly spent alot of time outside playing in the snow. After hours, we'd be nearly frozen to the bone when we went inside with our little red faces, wet snowsuits, boots, & mittens. Grandma ( we lived with her) had a clothesline strung along the wall in the dining room where old register was. All the hot air from the coal furnace in the basement blew through there & dried our clothes there. Good ole days. Now I'm after hubby to get me the remote starter & heated seats in the car. How things change hey?!!! LOL

I do admire you snowbirds...but my experiences in the snow were just plain cold and wet! I love seeing the beautiful pictures when it first falls...Have a super day!

By Azfinn (Azfinn) on Sunday, December 4, 2005 - 04:17 pm:

Can't help but think of the smell of all the wet wool drying on the radiators in grade school. Just when it was dry we went outside for recess and the process began again..... What patience our teachers must have had while we put on and took off all that winter stuff several times a day!

By Nancy (Nsanderson) on Sunday, December 4, 2005 - 06:13 pm:

I remember coming in from playing in the snow and my mother would take a broom and sweep us off before we could come inside. Was it cold when we were kids? Also recall the smell of wet mittens on the steam radiator in the Gay School. Some memories are just too good to forget.

By Judith Dodson (Jdmi) on Sunday, December 4, 2005 - 07:15 pm:

Congratulations to Houghton High School girls basketball team for winning the Class C championship in Grand Rapids Saturday. Wow, what a great game, what great playing. I'm proud to be a Yooper.

By Richard Johnson (Dick_fl) on Sunday, December 4, 2005 - 08:18 pm:

Wow, the smell of mittens drying on the radiator. What a great memory. And getting brushed off with the broom. And, no it was never cold when we were kids. The U.P. sure was a great place to grow up. I wouldn't trade that for anything in the world. I sure wish I was there now. 35 years here is way too long. Bah-Humbug to Florida!!!

By Grace M Wetton (Gmw) on Sunday, December 4, 2005 - 09:05 pm:

The smell of mittens drying on the radiator, wet snowsuits and boots, getting brushed off with the broom, hot chocolate to warm up.

WoooooooHoooooooooo... Guess what? I am so lucky.. I am here, live in person in the midst of winterwonderland, with a blizzard blazing around me in HANCOCK! I was able to travel up for the Houle ladies Christmas party this weekend at my sisters in Houghton. (4 of the 5 sisters were there, and our Mother, 2 Aunties , 1 niece, 6 cousins and it was GREAT!). I love the snow! It is so pretty, so envigorating and MAN IS IT COLD! Such fun. But we have a question about the Hut...is pasty central going to be re-opening the Hut as a restaurant or just as Pasty central facilites? I will watch for your reply, Charlie or Mary. Thanks...

Taken from the press release on the Nov. 2nd What'sUP page: "The Hut itself is scheduled to re-open in the spring, featuring its traditional menu as a family restaurant, with the addition of a gift shop and observation deck for viewing pasty production.

Azfinn--When and where did you go to school? Your posts remind me of my school days at Mohawk and Ahmeek schools in the 60's.
