Looks like the Pasty Cam is for the birds today. Now that hunting season is over, the camp is aired out, swept out and the hunter is worn out, it's a good time to move on to my favorite winter pastime - - filling the bird feeders and watching the different species come to dine. Aladino Mandoli spotted a Chickadee out on the porch of what looks like my hunting shack. Gotta love those little birds, so tame they'll eat out of your hand if you stand still long enough. The Nuthatch is another fun bird to watch, this one caught by Ken Scheibach is grabbing himself a peanut, to feast on back at the nest. The last shot, also from Ken, is one of my favorite birds, the Downy Woodpecker, often mistaken for the Hairy Woodpecker, but this guy is the smaller of the two species.

Big day for live sports over at Pasty.NET! The Houghton Gremlin Girl's Basketball team plays for the State Championship at 4pm, Calumet battles Cranbrook in Hockey at 6:40pm, and Michigan Tech has 3 events broadcast through the day. Catch it all at Keweenaw's Internet Provider, Pasty.NET.

Great Birdhouse! Nice close-up shots...

Last weekend when I was in the UP, I enjoyed
watching birds at a birdfeeder. It was
especially nice to be watching chickadees,
grosbeaks(sp.?) and a big woodpecker--not
birds I would normally be watching in my
backyard in Toronto. Nice too to be sharing a
cup of tea and homemade fruitcake with
friends and family. And wonderful to watch my
friend's daughter and friend tubing down the
hill behind the old barn.

The snow doesn't seem to bother the birds but I can't help but wonder how they survive the cold. They look so delicate,so fragile, and so beautiful.Great pictures!

Great pictures! I sit at my kitchen table with a fresh cup of coffee and watch the birds at my feeder for hours. What a great way to relax. Who needs TV for entertainment? The chickadees are my favorite. They stay in the lilac bushes and sing to me while I refill the sunflower seeds in the birdfeeder. They are here all year round. Some day I hope to invest in a digital camera so I can share.

I'm headed up for a week to Hancock for the holidays, anyone know of good spots in Houghton-Keweenaw-Baraga counties for boreal birds (gray jay, boreal chickadee, pine grosbeak, crossbills)? or even just real active feeders viewable from the street in town!

I just got back from New Jersey/Delaware for a birdwatching trip, and saw the brown-headed nuthatch, which has a call like a dog's squeek toy -how cute is that?
