Help...Is there any way to access yesterday's What's UP? My mom said there were photos posted of Superior taken the day the Fitzgerald went down, and I never got a chance to see them.

By Charles in Adrian (Charlesinadrian) on Friday, November 11, 2005 - 10:38 am:

Here in Adrian Veterans Day is sunny but cold. When I was
giving talks on those days about our local veterans, it always
seemed to be cold, windy and raining -- and yet the vets would
show up. Everyone's favorite was our last WWI vet. He died just
a few years ago. Any WWI vets left in the U.P.? I hear there are
only 5 left in all of Canada so I doubt the U.P. has any left. So it
goes.
Yesterday I mentioned a good new mystery written about the
U.P., and others wrote in, too, with some of their favorites.
Llamamama asked for other names of authors who write about
the U.P. Jim Harrison is without a doubt the best-known of all
writers currently living who writes about the U.P. Another who
should be better-known because he is a really good writer is
John Smollens. He is a professor, I guess, at NMU, and so he
writes about the Marquette County area. His novel, Cold, is
really , well, "cold" in its depiction of winter and of the coldness
that seems to take over some peoples' hearts, minds and
actions. Luckily, he finds characters to bring these no-good
uglies to justice. So put Smollens on your list of good U.P.
writers to try too.

Charles: I'm picking up the Joseph Heywood at my library today. Thanks for the names of the other two authors. I'll "check them out"!

Japei,
Thanks for the pictures of the smoke sauna yesterday. We had a good sauna in one in Finland 10 yrs. ago. Being my husband was born in Finland, he remembers them well.

Danbury,
How about letting us know what the word meant yesterday. Did it happen to mean "name brother"?

By JoAnne, Washington State (Davejostef) on Friday, November 11, 2005 - 01:33 pm:

I read in our paper today that the VA has only 8 WW1 vets still in their system in the US. Might be more alive yet but just not registered with the VA. Won't be long and they'll all be gone. Sigh...

Thanks, Vets of all wars and ages. Your service is under appreciated and so very important to our history AND our future.

God Bless.

By Danbury (Danbury) on Friday, November 11, 2005 - 02:38 pm:

Oops, sorry. Guess it does - not that I knew what "name brother" really is, but it just seems right.
I wouldn't have posted if I weren't a "Hans", too.

By Ray & Chris (Ray) on Friday, November 11, 2005 - 07:35 pm:

Of all of the tributes to veterans, this one seems to say it all. Thanks to each and everyone of you!
